Hey fellas,
I tried searching for an answer around the forums but wasn't able to find much. So I have a 1989 model with the supposedly much sought-after clip-on bars. I'm honestly not a fan of them - it just doesn't do it for me. I'd much rather have something like the stock "straight-through" bars on the later models. So the simple question is... is it possible to use other kinds of bars on a 1989 model? What does it involve replacing?
If it is possible - let me know if any of you want to trade.
It is possible. The GS uses a second plate on top of the top triple to mount the handlebars onto. You have clip-ons mounted to this plate. I'm assuming the easiest way to get a single bar mount would be to buy the handlebar mounting plate from a newer bike. The newer plates have a set of clamps that hold a single bar onto it. I'm sure you could find one pretty easily.
I just bought a set of clip-ons and mounting plate from eBay yesterday from an '89. Looks like we're going reverse.
you could trade someone here for thier regular top plate and handlebars, since the 89 clip ons are sought after...
Yep they change over.
Had I not bought a set of clip ons on on Saturday, I would say trade me for them. But once I get my new bars I'll be willing to sell my old ones to you.

If you're going to trade, make sure you swap top plates along with bars.
