So I sold my Gs 500 to my roomate and purchased a honda magna 750, Right before I sold my gs I put new clutch plates in it. I had little experience with working on clutches so this could be the cause of my problem.... Anyways my roomate managed to dump my old gs leaving the drive way due to what he said was an "oil slick" in the road... From where I was standing it looked more like he didn't see the curb in front of him... but I digress, He dumped it the bike just had the clutch changed and now it can only shift through three gears... He is running generic 10w40 wich was used before with no problems and we've tried shifting gears with out the crancase cover on and no oil in the system and still only three gears. it looks like the mechanism isn't rotating enough to catch for fourth gear. it seems like it is getting stuck... My roomate figures he'll just ride with three gears, but I don't want him weighing down my back seat when my bike overheats... any suggestions?

Doesn't sound like a clutch issues, sounds like the selector fork thingy is bent.
I cant remember what is called but sounds like you will be tearing into it pretty soon.
You are rolling it back and forth when trying to get to switch gears, ect ect

Clutch actuator arm? Although that is what the clutch cable attaches to and technically you don't need the clutch lever to upchange in a wet clutch.
Hrmmm gear selector lever, then again i would imagine a generic movement that just makes the bike flick over a cog?! Im not sure how you would lose some gears and not others. I can't imagine thats a clutch issue more gearbox related.
First thing I would suspect is a a bent shift-shaft, did it go over on the L/H side? Get the cover off and check the hook and claw for wear or damage, make sure the mechanism is tight and all the springs are in place. Try turning the selecter drum with a screwdriver while someone else gently pushes the bike forward and see if it will go into the higher gears. If not there is little else you can do, the problem is internal and probably related to the selecter forks.
Dude, you need to rock the bike to run it through more than 1 or 2 gears. So, sit on it and push it back and forth while shifing.

well thanks for all the suggestions so far but it still isn't working, my friend got it up to fifth gear by rocking it. He then had a lot of trouble getting it to neutral, any other suggestions?
Dude - rock it again - the damn thing will not shift otherwise. Or ride it.

Bike transmissions are not like car transmissions. You have to rock the bike back and forth to get it to shift gears.
My friend says it wont shift while riding it either
In that case, a bike tranmission will also not shift under load even with partial load. If the tranny and motor are disengaged then it will shift a lot easier. So, I suspect your clutch cable is loose or something.
