several fires in the area, Malibu is the closest though. Couple friends have been evacuated. High winds supposed to remain for a few days...that can't be good.

I am directly unaffected except for the ash in the air and the amazing sunsets...

I am sitting here at my desk wishing there was something I could do, it is 10:30 am here and the news is saying that San Diego County is getting hit hard as well as new developments in Malibu and Irvine. I just wanted to wish you all well, and send out to my regards to all of you in the fire areas. Peace everyone.

For everyone who makes fun of Socal for not having seasons, just remember that there are four distinct seasons: earthquake, flood, riot, and fire.

isn't malibu always on fire this time of year?
Title: Re: malibu is on fire
Post by: pantablo on October 22, 2007, 11:13:53 PM
yes, but this is a particularly bad set of coincidental conditions, with the super high winds and high heat (both caused by unusual santa ana condition) .

My Brother lives out there. In Fallbrook.

I talked to him yesterday and he said that things were OK but they were ready to evacuate.

Six hours later he called my mom and said that his girls were with friends on the coast and that he had been activated. He is in the Guard.

He also said that part of Fallbrook had already burned and his Ex. had decided to stay with the house.

My prayers go out for everyone out there.

PJ.

i called about 8 volunteer numbers via latimes.com links and only the last one had an operator available. they are chock full of volunteers but she  said attention span was low, so call back later in the week, i.e. Friday, and they might be doing more intake.

this is not as appalling as Katrina but the number (513,000 evacuated from san diego) boggles my mind.

It may sound crass but I still haven't seen any of this except the haze, and I might be down for a little foray via GS tomorrow. Not to SD, but beachward.

went to a music show tonight and was coughing, noticed flakes of ash raining down. On the ride back home with buddy on the back, ash is streaking all over, only visible in the headlight, or in an unusual halo around distant lights.

Air quality is pretty bad right now, if you have to drive might consider keeping the air on recycle, and maybe staying off the bike unless you have to go somewhere. The dust is going to be on the street for quite a while.

Just checking in to say "I'm alive" and the bike hasn't burned yet.

Kind of hairy, knowing that all the major freeways are closed out of the area due to fires.  Definitely gets my pyro side standing tall, though!

"...Highway Patrol and sheriff's deputies were looking for the suspect, who witnesses said took off on a Honda motorcycle, wearing a red-and-white striped helmet.

Four residents of the area grabbed shovels and put out the brush fire with dirt, said sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller.

A CHP helicopter, using infrared equipment, caught sight of Rund on his motorcycle, Miller said. Along with CHP officers, sheriff's deputies found and arrested Rund at a home along Highway 173 near Highway 138, she said."

hmmm... if mk1 doesnt post for a while we know where he is with his 'pyro side standing tall'

you'd think...
but its the contractors that are busy, not the architects, due to this sort of disaster.

Its funny, I dont notice the ash in the air so much as a general hazy quality to the sunlight, then you look on the buildings or the sidewalk and realize the sunlight is colored a pinkish orange due to the haze...its a bit freaky and surreal. apocolyptic.

what i meant pablo, is the contractors would be busy yes, BUT you would think some of those people, might want to take this opportunity to make changes to tehir homes plan etc :thumb:. on a side note pablo, i know your busy with your firm and such, but when i get autocad re-installed, i want to make ( a plan up, and have you evaluate it. if youve got a free moment, ie critique my errors etc. im goin to get into the drafting field, but i need to get teh rust out of my gears first. if you cant do it, i understand, completely, , if you can, well i appreciate it either way

some might want to do something different but what I remember from the last round of fires the insurance companies will only pay out on replacing the exact loss...not a new design.

Happy to check your work out.

I'm still here...It's just a "Wow, glad I only light fires in pits on the beach" kinda thing, more than I want to go *start* something ablaze.

my dad told me there is a rumor going around that ALL of these recent fires were started by an arsonist. and sadly, if this is the case, insurance may very well say  :flipoff: and not pay any claims at all.  :o

arson is definite in one or two fires but I read the malibu and at least one other was a result of the incredibly high winds we had toppling over power lines.

dont mean to threadjack but

where do you get 10w40 oil around here. Honda of Hollywood is a POS highway robbery dinged up wrong parts order shithole and they only had synthetic wacko brand at $8.50 per quart plus tax. wtf. I hate that place.

I might try Hollywood Motorcycles next but maybe an auto parts store? Pep Boys only has 20w60.

wtf

motorcycle shops are going to have motorcycle oil. I always get mine at marina del rey honda because its close. There must be other motorcyce dealers, like yamaha, suzuki, etc, nearby...

Honda of Hollywood sells Suzuki and Kawasaki as well. The only other nearby shop that I know of is Hollywood Motorcycles, which is a Yamaha dealer. I agree, Honda of Hollywood blows. I've never been to Hollywood Motorcycles, so I can't vouch for them. I've heard good things about the service at Pro Italia in Glendale, but I dunno about their prices. It is a bit further, but you can always use that as an excuse to hit up the Crest.

I usually went to the Cyclegear in Lomita. Good people there, but that's probably too far for you.

^^pro italia sucks for service. my friend took his then new 999 over there and it came back with an additional 125 miles on it...just coincidentally the distance from the shop to wrightwood and back...bike went in with less than 600 miles...

they should be fine to buy oil at though. there's another shop not too far from there, an independent. Goodguy took me there once. Wish I could remember the name...
