Title: Fork seals?
Post by: ladybrid on August 11, 2003, 10:44:00 AM
How hard is it to change these?
Have noticed a slow oil leak (tiny puddle in garage) that finally traced to front forks.  sigh

You can DIY with the aid of a manual and/or this board.  It may be more work and more difficulty than you want to tackle at this time.  If so, you can R&R the fork legs and let the dealer do the bench work.  Get a couple estimates to make sure you're saving money!

Well, I have an auto mechanic for a housemate who thinks he can do it, no problem... I'm going to read the manual and see what I think.

It isn't too tough.  It's definitely not worth what a dealer would charge you to do the job.  The seals are only about 10 bucks.  It will take you a couple hours though.  Just remember to loosen the bolts in the bottom of the forks FIRST while they still have spring tension on them.  An impact gun will make it a snap (probably a poor choice of words hahahaha).

Cool!
I will ask the mechanic if he has an impact gun... always good to have the proper tools.

Short of having an impact, ,sometimes the bolt will keep spinning. After taking mine apart about 4 times this month, I now put an allen key on it, then a small socket on the elbow of the allen, and smack it counter clockwise with a hammer. Works like an impact if you don't have one.
