I have a 1989 GS500. It needs a little work. I will sell it for $600. All it really needs is the carbs adjusted and a little plastic work. we ride it about every day. I currently have it listed on ebay.
I have a 96 gs500e. only 3078mi. I just bought it in July..my first bike. I haven't thought about selling it yet, but I would consider. Some scratches and dings on left side of bike where previous owner dropped it in his drive, otherwise looks good. I live in Columbus, Ohio.

95 to 2001 - yea that's the one you want, pre 95 it was all crap. Yea. The post 95 ones never seize up or use oil or whatever, never mind the condition or miles, 95-2001 yea.

It was always all the time, but it was somehow interlaced by some useful information sometimes. Now that I haven't touched the bikes in ~45 days, its all sarcasm all the time.
But more to the point.
Planned Obsolesence - look it up Brok dude. Some one here posted it on an unrelated topic.
Bikes that work and work for a very looooonnnnnng time are detrimental to the damn company making them. They want sheite to look great and feel great and break often. With every visual upgrade (and sometimes without) comes a down grade you cannot see.
I've been on the insides of these motors. There is no way a 83 motor should be better built than a 93 when they are essentially the same design. The 83 motor needed nothing so suzuki didn't make any easy money off it once you rode off the lot. They dont want it to break under warranty, so even the new one's not entirely sucky, but in 83 they were trying to still impress the world with relibility and durability and longevity. The new ones are designed to survive the warranty period no matter how you use it (and some dont even make it that far).
I believe 96 saw a huge down grade of the internals for a GS. Maybe more downgrades followed in 01 or 04 or what not.
Your idea of getting a decent bike should be to ask for a bike in good condition and good manitenance no matter what year, and you compare looks vs looks regardless of the year. I have seen 98+ bikes trashed, and a few 89/90's in cherry shape. Overall a 89-95 will last longer than 96 and later but how much and under what situations will it be nearly the same comes to maintenance. Everything being the same, 89-95 should outlast most of the later years.
BTW the only GS I have is a 96 so I am not telling you to get what I have.
