Title: What do you guys do for neck warmers???
Post by: bombadillo on October 27, 2007, 11:15:05 PM
I was out in the early morning the other day and was wearing some summer type gloves (mesh on the tops and knuckles) and my jacket with the liner in.  My neck and hands were freezing after just a short time.  What do you guys do for keeping your neck warm while riding in the cold/rain???

Wear a neck warmer.

I've been using a plain, cylindrical Turtle Fur neck warmer.  Turtle Fur goes on first, then the jacket and helmet.  The front of the Turtle Fur gets tucked up into my helmet just enough to cover my mouth.  (If it's not cold enough that I need to cover my mouth, I don't use anything.)

But ... different strokes for different folks.  I believe my brother (bigburma) tends toward balaclavas and dickies.  There must be ALL KINDS of options out there.... (http://bbburma.net/Smilies/dunno_black.gif)

I cut the leg out of an old pair of sweat pants. double it up and you have a penny tech neck warmer.

From my crazy cyclo-crossin days nothing beats a balaclava:

It's only $20, but don't wear it unless it's COLD out, you'll burn up ;)

I use a wool sock and a safety pin.

Might have to check out the turtle fur thing, I've stuck myself with the pin more than once.

Just grab a white scarf and a bomber jacket...don't forget to let the scarf trail behind you in the wind.

This is why I'm going with a balaclava when it gets cold...I'm completely paranoid about unsecured luggage/effects and the chain.  I read a story once about someone putting their leather jacket under bungees on the back of the bike when it got hot out, and the jacket sleeve got wrapped up in the chain causing a lowside on the highway.

I use a ski/snowboarding face mask:

It basically wraps around your face and tucks down into your shirt.  It has some type of foam between the fabric that keeps air from getting through.
