Title: Believe it or not, I want your stock muffler...
Post by: BassHz on October 30, 2007, 02:16:08 PM
One of the PO's ripped out the baffles in my muffler and it sounds like a race bike.  I didn't mind it at first but I now want to bring it back to that whisper quiet stock sound.

If you've got a muffler with enough of the "mid pipe" section to get near the 2 into 1 part, I'll take it.  I believe I can have a muffler shop fabricate a sleeve to connect the pipes together.

If you want my loud muffler, and yours is still stock, maybe we could just trade the complete systems.

Otherwise, if anyone knows of another alternative for quieting this thing down...the OEM system costs $560 from Suzuki.

No.  I'm looking for an unmodified stock muffler that maybe someone cut off to do the srinath flange mod or that was replaced with a Jardine system.

Thanks anyway for checking in but I think your drilled muffler is going to sound pretty much like the one I have.

I believe I still have my stock muffler on the shelf in my garage, only problem being it doesn't have any of the mid pipe, its cut just before the weld on the muffler. Let me know if you are intersted, Just pay shipping.

thats a great deal if hes going to take it to an exhaust shop anyway to get a sleeve made it will be just as cheap to have a midpipe made between his original headers and the end can.

I too have a stock can, but it's cut just past the narrowing point, and it's cracking at the weld there.  If you wanted to get a shop to tack it with a welder and fab a mid-pipe, just like Absolute Rescue, its yours for shipping.  No scratches on the can.

Hey, thanks for the offers and the price is definately right.  How much of the pipe is left (from the weld point)?  Are we talking millimeters?  I'm not sure what you're calling the narrowing point.  I'm afraid if left to the muffler shop guys, it will end up looking like Frankenstein's exhaust system.

Just curious why you guys cut the pipe so close to the can?  Did you end up using that portion of the stock pipe?

I'm about ready to throw in the towel and go with a full Jardine system with their QMI noise reducer but I'm not thrilled with the $400+ price tag.  Laser (Jama) makes a quiet replacement muffler and mid-pipe similar to the srinath flange but it costs $400+ also because of shipping from Europe and it looks a little odd to me.

I cut mine close because I though I could get away with using the stock mid pipe. Unfortunately I was wrong and and after modifying the stock mid pipe it was no longer usable for the stock can so I just threw it away. I had a new mid pipe made up for the cost of 2 bends (about $3).

I used most of my mid-pipe to attach the aftermarket can.  So what's left on mine is the stock can, the black cone that narrows down to the mid-pipe, and a bit of the mid-pipe.

Do you think I could cut my pipe at the same spot and butt weld them together?  Is it at a weird angle that would be hard to duplicate?

Or what the hell...Cut both pieces at the original weld point (the narrow point) thereby using the entire length of my existing mid-pipe?

Do you guys have pix posted anywhere of your bikes?  Sanjay, are you saying you made your Yosh TRS work with the stock mid-pipe?

At the original weld point it looks like there are two layers of pipe.  Not sure how it works to cut and weld there with the original mid-pipe.  I made my TRS work with the stock mid-pipe, but had to take it to a shop to get the tube expanded because the '04+ midpipes it's designed for are larger than on my '01.  I'll try to take some pics and get the up, but probably not until tomorrow or Sat.

the 04+ midpipe is 55mm wide (diameter) the midpipe from older models is 45mm wide (diameter)
I also cut mine off at the weld to be able to use the stock midpipe with aftermarket exhaust.

I didn't intend for this to be a 'how to' thread but...

How did you get the Leo Vince bolt-on can to work on the stock mid-pipe?  Did you use a flange? Any photos?

yep! custom made flange which fits (all/most) 2005 gsxr600 bolt-on cans  :icon_twisted:  sweet, isn't it?

PS. since the pictures were taken, I've changed the angle of the flush mounts so don't tell me they look bad  ;)

Thanks for the link.  It looks great and I don't see anything that looks bad.  If you think that looks dirty, I'd hate to hear what you would say about my bike.  :o

Do you still plan to post a sound clip or video?

I need to find a good muffler shop who's not afraid to do some custom work and talk to them about my options.

yes I will eventually make an sound clip but currently all I have is digital camera with poor quality built-in microphone and I don't think the sound will be good.

it looks bad if you look from behind the bike...
I'll try to have it fixed during the winter and I'll post some pictures then.

Update.  I have a short-term fix of stuffing the gap around the tail pipe where the knocked out baffle was with insulation to redirect the sound back through the original path.  I've never heard an unmodified stock gs500 muffler so I don't know how it compares but it is much more quiet.  It has kind of a cool growl when increasing the throttle at lower rpms and still seems plenty loud when heading for the redline.  Also, the dead spot in the throttle went away.  I think the system was lacking in back pressure and is now more smooth all around.

Thanks for the offers but I'm going to pursue this solution for now.  If I keep the bike next season, I'll probably replace the whole exhaust system and rejet.

is exhaust loud when you're heading to the red line or the engine?? with my stock muffler I've noticed that the engine was very loud but exhaust extremly quiet. I didn't like it cause I felt the engine was not "breathing" properly.
Well... it may just be me.

+1 for rejet and new exhaust system
cheers

Yeah.  If there's a down side to the quieter exhaust, it's hearing the unrefined engine noise.  It seems to vibrate a lot in the 5000-7000 rpm range.  I have a feeling this can is louder than stock because sound still bleeds around the center tail pipe.

I suppose it could be intake noise I'm hearing at high rpms but it starts sounding like a formula car at 7000 and its all smiles up to 11000.

That sounds pretty normal as far as the sound goes my 05 sounded like that from about 6500 to redline.
