Title: Motorcycle passenger etiquette
Post by: Jayhovah on November 07, 2007, 08:29:27 PM
Lets say I am going to have a passenger on my bike.. perhaps a young lady.
What is etiquette? Should I offer my helmet or jacket or what? On the other hand.. I don't want to be riding around without a helmet on...

Ditto.

Or, if you don't know her very well (like some random at a club or something) you can let her ride without.  ;)   If you go down, you'd probably be liable for any injuries, but at least your head would be safe.  Either that or make her sign a "ride at own risk" contract.

Anyone female that you care enough about to trust your life with (she CAN cause an accident as a PASSENGER!) deserves to be given proper riding gear.

Giving over your helmet may be 'cute' for her and her friends, but it likely won't fit, or protect her. And you'll be wearing what again if you do ?

It's your responsibility to keep her safe.

Gear her up or leave her at home.

Yeap, bikes don't make good pulling machines really. Taking your girl on the back to show her your skillz just ends in disaster ... every single time. If you wana take a girl for a ride. She needs to be wearing a helmet, good jacket and gloves at least. Then tell her to wear jeans and decent strong shoes, not flip flops or high heels. I think the key thing to remeber is you can't just go for a "quick spin". If you want to take someone for a ride you need to take your time and do it properly. If you want to be safe you can't just tell em jump on and go for a blast.

Also don't forget to tell em to hold on to you or the bike and to sit upright. Not to lean in to the corners and not to lean the opposite way in the corners just keep upright and let you do all the movement.

Leaning in the corners - I usually tell my wife to lean with me, but a bit less - 25% less or so.
Cool.

ideally you should have two full sets of gear.

anything less is added risk for whoever isn't wearing it.

i've ridden girls with a helmet only, but if anything happens they are going to be scraped bloody or worse. plus, other bikers will give you dirty looks. better to be safe--upgrade gear when u can afford it and keep it around for your friends.

There's a nice thread on the net of a girl who fell off the back of a bike on a US freeway wearing only a bikini.

Yeah didn't look pretty, 3rd degree durns, lost one of her breasts and was in hospital for a long time for skin graphs and plastic surgery!!!

^^ I saw that story posted on barf but i can't find it. If i remember correctly she was wearing a hoody and jeans. the guy was going to fast and she said she didn't want to lean over on him and she just "flew" off. needless to say there was nothing left of the jeans and hoody, she said she looked at her knee and thought it have a bunch of gravel in the road rash but it was actually pieces of her knee cap  :o
