I've read a few threads about new handlebars on 89's causing problems with cable tension, etc. Is there a specific wiring pattern to follow with this change or am I screwed and just have to wing it? I've ordered the factory top plate, and a Bikemaster Daytona bar. I'm also installing the hand guards from a DL650 so I need to get some bar ends that will work on these bars and with hand guards. Any suggestions?

I can't help you much, but I remember reading about the cable routing issue. At worst, I imagine you may need to re route them out of the frame. I have no idea how the hand guards mount though. The bikemaster bars are just hollow, so the usual bar ends are the compression fit kind, not the screw in kind on your 89's clip ons. hope ot helps a little :-/
Hi, there, i have put a set of renthals (motorcrossbars) on my 93 GS and they fitted fine, i had to remove the clip ons and top yoke cover, then just added a set of rissers. and there are universal hand protectors on ebay that come with all the fitting needed, my be worth a look 250184149971

I've just done the opposite of what you are going to do. i.e. regular bars to clip-ons.
I have MAJOR problems with cables being too long and it resulted in a lot of problems, one causing another. Hopefully, you don't have the same problems I've had. Good luck. (Btw, 89 cables are about 6 inches shorter than the cables that were on my bike, a 92 GS.)

I broke the choke cable, the clutch cable is rusted.
i have gotten new, longer, cables and I hope to prevent any problems before they present themselves. new bars, new top plate, new cables, new helmet, beer, tools, beer, repair manual, beer. the basics.
I should finish up this week. Can only work on it on thursday eve due to kids events and work..
Next step - paint ze bike.
