Title: BREATHER HOSE OBSOLETE WITH LUNCHBOX? / GS500 '02
Post by: racingtulip on November 10, 2007, 08:31:58 PM
Greetings GS dudes and dudettes. I'm new to the GS500 world, and very impressed with this forum, where I've already garnered a wealth of info.

Earlier this year, I bought a used 2002 model. I'm going to replace the stock fuel shutoff valve setup (tank + vacuum petcock) with a single Pingel on/off/reserve that I will screw into the tank (replacing the current annoying screwdriver command setup!)

I'm also throwing out the stock airbox and attaching a K-N filter directly to the carb manifolds.

So the question is: what do I do with the BREATHER HOSE that connects to front of airbox?

Hope someone can help.

Many thanks.

Welcome to the nut haus.   :icon_mrgreen:

Put a small breather filter on it to keep dirt and bugs out.  The breather filter should be somewhere around 2" od, with a hose barb to fit the breather hose.  Your local auto parts store probably has something that will fit.

Be sure to locate it where it is out of the airstream.  Over time the filter will become saturated with oil vapor.  If you leave it in the airstream like I have your left boot will become darker than your right.

or do what I did and make a catch bottle to catch the oily fumes.

NICE!!

I'll be doing that this winter...I'd been racking my brains on what to do myself.
I see you extended the breather hose too: good idea.

Another option is to cut a hole in the rubber part of the filter and add a fitting to attach the hose. Common plumbing parts can be used.

Depends if you want that oily mist blown all through your carbs, intake ports and valves. I prefer to catch them in a bottle.

Plumbing to the airfilter is better for emissions however.

The best of both worlds would be an oil/air separator.

Same like my bottle, except without the vent holes, have a vent hose that is attached into your air filter.
