Title: Sheared bolt
Post by: jazerr on November 19, 2007, 10:17:48 PM
Okay, I swear it wasnt me....

A buddy of mine rode my gs, loved it, bought one. Its a 91.

Anyway, he went to do his first oil change this weekend, and overtightened the top right oil filter cover bolt. sheered the top right off.

Anyway, I went to help. Since the cover itself isnt threaded, we took that off, and grabbed a pair of vice grips to try and turn the bolt out but that sucker is REALLY in there. Its got about 1/4 inch showing, but now I cant thread anything onto it, since I used vice grips first.

Any ideas?

wd-40, vice grips, and a hammer. hit the end of the bolt with the hammer while turning the vice grips- make sure to clamp em down real good since you cant use the bolt anymore anyways.

Use something better than WD-40 though.  And be sure to really soak it.  PB Blaster seems to work really well.  So does tobasco sauce!

If the end of the bolt is still sticking out, you can take a file to either side of it to make opposing flat surfaces for your grips. File off just enough to give you a good grip on the bolt shaft - too much and you can end up snapping off what's left, and then you'll be drilling it out.

I have had good luck with PB blaster. Soak it in every day for a few days, then hit it with a propane or MAP gas torch and wack it with a hammer a few times and then use the vice grip hammer method from above. I have gotten countless 50 yr old rusted bolts from jeeps out this way.

How can I soak it? its sticking out perpendicular to the motor, IN the hole for the oil filter cover,,,

you can also try the two nut method, that might work.

I meant every time you walk past the thing spray liberal amounts of PB blaster on it.
