Post by: Garethbourne on November 23, 2007, 03:00:07 AM
99.9 pence per liter, thats around £4.50 per gallon, in the UK, around $9 per gallon US.

65% of that is tax...

Bear in mind that a US gallon is about 83% of a British gallon, so the equivalent is more like $7.50/US gallon for comparison purposes.

As top gear put it... actually petrol here is cheap, very very cheap, cheaper than water. Which they say makes no sense, i mean to get petrol to us here in the UK they have to build millions of dollars worth of oil rig, float it out into the sea, dig a huge hole, not find any oil, move the rig, dig another big hole, find oil, ship it to a multi million dollar refinary, clean it up, get rid of any waste, pacakage it and ship it to england and THEN ship it to the petrol stations to put in our cars. Yet for water they find a natural spring plotted on a map, bottle the water and ship it. Yet they worked out we WOULD be paying 30p a liter for petrol compared to £2 a liter for a bottle of bloody mineral water.

We get raped on TAX, hence why our fuel costs are insane and were all buying super expensive car's packed with technology for low emmisions and low fuel consumption just so we can afford to run them.

Not to mention by the time you take all the tax deducted from our earnings 40% tax, add to that VAT we pay on nearly EVERY product we buy, add to that fuel costs and other tax's such as car tax, rubbish tax all sorts of tax. What we really earn, money that we can spend is like %20-30 of our salaries if that.

Yes, definitely. :(
That's one of the reasons why we drive small, can-sized cars. :icon_mrgreen:
(And my country still pay taxes on petrol to finance, among other things, the 1936 Abyssinian invasion...go figure :icon_rolleyes:)

Canada was $$$ always. However now that the US $$ is below the canadian $$ you'd think it will be lower in canada. Those things that have a hard coded price like books $5.95 US, $6.95 Can ... I guess you're screwed.
Cool.

I love living in the Mid-West. I fulled up last at 2.84 a gallon and I've seen it as low as 2.76 too bad I had just filled up.
Title: Re: Fuel Costs

last fillup $3.10 in just outside Buffalo, NY. (that's USD, US gallons)

I actually look forward to much higher prices ($5/US gallon) to curb some of the idiots driving huge vehicles.

We don't burn alot of fuel unless we're traveling, and as the price increases, flying becomes more attractive.

Flame me if you want, but higher oil prices can help focus peoples' attention to driving smarter cars, instead of just having the biggest available. :)

2 cents

$3.27 to $3.60 for Regular on the west side of Los Angeles.

I never thought I would agree with a statement like ohgood's , but I do now.

Not so much on this side of town, but where we used to live we had so many huge, lifted 4x4 trucks that are the size of the original "Bigfoot" "Monster Truck" 25 years ago or so cruising around, it was just mind boggling.  :cookoo:
They had a lot of them on display at the auto show here too. These monster competiton trucks trucks used to just crush cars, now they are so big they sail over a huge line of them, using the first for a take off ramp! I never thought I'd be driving on the street with so many huge vehicles. People who have so much ego into a truck like this that will never touch dirt should pay a penalty for that huge carbon footprint, IMHO.

We have dropped one car from the family and now just have a minivan for trips and van camping. I take the bus, walk, ride my bike, borrow a car for grocery shopping. If the GS didn't take 15 minutes to warm up and wasn't parked against the wall in front of the other roomie's car, I'd take it out more (once I get a new BATTERY in it   :icon_rolleyes:).

We pay more for premium bottled water than gas, something wrong with that.

Supposedly it will be $4. a gallon by Christmas, and on it's way to $5. a gallon next year.

And if we dumped tea into the harbor, Heal The Bay wouldn't even be able to tell, the water is so filthy!

Gas prices are high yes...But whats amazing is how in the last year and half the auto companies like ford and especially gmc have come out with their hybrid line.  Where as before the gas crunch they made almost no effort to promote or market "greener" vehicles.  I drive a 97 gmc sierra 4x4 witht he 305 engine in it.  This gets anywhere from 8-14 mpg.   I had it when i was in highschool and living in the snow belt of pa. The truck was usefull because we lived out in the country and needed it.  But now i live in florida and have no real use for 4x4 or the weight it adds to the truck.  But i dont have the heart to get rid of it.  I did have the luck of driving a yaris (sp?) the other day.  And i must say it was a nice little car, great mpg,  and had more creature comforts along with bells and wistles then i expected it to.  But i dont think your average person would be able to work on the engine if they wanted to.  I dont know how you guys over pond there manage to enjoy yourself.  According to your taxes and gas your paycheck is spent before you get it.   But at least you know you have health care.

I have no problem paying our prices for gas. $3.15 a us gallon.  But what i want answered and i believe so does the rest of this country is.

1 if we can spend billions on a war we dont want to be in.    Why cant we have a car that runs on air?  Im sure if you gave the smartest group of scientists over a billion dollars and said " get me a car that runs on air"  they could do it.

2 I find it hard to believe that after over 100 years of the automobile being around  we havent majorly improved its mpg past what the very first model t had. I mean look at the jump in computers. i believe the technology doubles every 5 years in electronics.   for the most part gas mileage has moved up at all.

Thank god for the gs though

I encountered my old friend  fuel starvation this morning. Somehow my 4 gallon tank only needed 2 gallons to fill it to the neck. Go figure. Reserve was a bucking bronco as usual. I was only doing 85 for a few minutes before it started happening. Oh well, 120 miles to a tank before reserve. No biggie.

Then I filled up with 87 octane for $2.99 / gallon in downtown Tampa. I used to fill up my VW for $9 in high school.

Bring on the high priced fuel. $5/ gallon isn't quite enough to make people start looking at SUV's with real contempt. We need $8/ gallon gas like the euros to finally kill these stupid guzzling tanks off for good. :)

>nastynate:
Well, one reason why we all drive very small cars, besides the fact that we pay for fuel much more than you do, is because our towns are much older than yours, they were established and grew up in a time where there hardly was a carriage horse running around
Try and find a park place for your Cadillac Escalade at any time here
And, what's more, vehicles are more expensive too for us to buy, AFAIK.
So, it happens that the best-selling vehicles this side of the Atlantic (nearly) all belong to the B-size (superminis) class.
Our "average Joe" everyday cars (see my sig, as an example) are just a little more than toys according to your standards

(...even though there are more and more SUV's here too on the roads :icon_confused:...)

I only dream of owning a 2.5L turbo diesel pickup like we have on the farm. Too expensive to run, too expensive to tax, and i can't park the mofo anywhere where i live.

Put it this way, if were talking about a high horsepower car (that an average joe could have) were talking a 200bhp VW Golf GTI or a Honda Civic Type R. The only other higher horsepower vehicles you see on the road are buisnessmen and city workers driving 3.5L BMW 5-series's. Even a 200bhp Golf GTI is going to cost you upwards of £15000.

We pay extortionate prices for petrol, tax, mot's, INSURANCE, and the damn car itself.
