Title: Chrome Up-keep
Post by: Jace009gs on December 03, 2007, 06:45:06 PM
Hey,

I was just wondering to those of you who have installed misc. chorme parts, or shinny parts, what do you put on them to keep road gunk off of them? Special wax?

Anyone recomend a good quality cleaner? This turtle wax chrome rubbing compound is just not shinny enough for me. It gets the bulk of the gunk but dosn't polish to well....

suggestion much abliged

I usually polish my aluminum regularly with Mother's Aluminum Polish.

Regarding chrome, I'm not sure.  I would be inclined to ask on a Harley forum.  With the amount of chrome on a bike like that I'm sure they have some good solutions for keeping the brightwork bright.   :thumb:

What is this chrome you speak of ?

OK, there is a black and gold tube (think toothpaste shaped) with a white cap, I can't remember the name. It does a fantastic job on chrome. Back when I had shiny wheels on a 4x4, it was the dogs nuts.

Nowadays, our cars have silver-esk wheels, and the gs has painted, and I miss that polishing chrome about as much as I miss having wisdom teeth pulled.

Jace,
Since 1966, I've used a chrome polish that is called "Simichrome". Don't use it on painted surfaces though, as it is mildly abrasive. It comes in a small tube, similar to a toothpaste tube.

I always find on at least my aluminium frame that cleaning the road crap off with a parafin soaked rag gets all the oil and salt and general shite off then i use t-cut to polish. That is when i can be arsed to polish. I HATE polishing. I think i would get more pleasure of stripping all the plastics and tank off so i could do the whole frame and exhaust with a polishing drill hehe. Polishing is a pain in the arse but atleast stuff don't go rusty!
