Title: What do I need to buy out of state GS?
Post by: BunnerRabbit on August 14, 2003, 06:48:55 AM
Ok I have been wanting a GS for awhile. I found one 5 hours away and am very interested in it. 97 $1700 6600 miles. Anyway what will I need Bill of sale? Title? I really can only get it on the weekend. Can I ask him to go ahead and get a notarised bill of sale prior to me comming? Anyway I guess I am a little nervose. How does that bike sound price wise?

The way it works in most states:
Besides the bike <G> you need the notorized bill of sale and the title in whatever state it was registered in. You take it home and to your local DMV or title/tag office and present the bill of sale, title, and perhaps the bike too for inspection. You pony up whatever micky mouse fees, registration/tag fees AND maybe the sales tax on the purchase. They should give you the new plate and a temp registration.  In a couple of weeks they mail you the new title for your state.

Make VERY SURE that the original title is filled out correctly, shows that any liens against it are signed off and does not have any corrections or scratched out lines.  Any of those will get the title application kicked back and it is a pain in the rear because the original owner will have to apply for a new copy of his title and then you have to try again.

Good luck,
James

NC I heard is a easy state to work out. Just title and Bill of sale maybe...NC charges personal property tax on these based on market value so its easy to register it ... Just what I heard. Would any other NC'ers care to post...Dond6, werase...
Cool.

Just need a title in VA. On the back of the title you have to record purchase price, odometer mileage, and certify that mileage is actual, unknown, or exceeding mechanical limit. Then you pay sales tax, property tax, registration fee, title fee, yadda yadda, and you're on your way.

Oh, and don't forget to make sure the VIN on the bike matches the VIN on the title. Got burned on that once - sucked.

It's also good to have the bike inspected (and passing) before you go to title it. The title should be what you need in most states- but as stated before  some states want the extra crap.

I've bought and sold a few bikes ( and only titled 1 of them to myself so far) in the past couple of years. I offer to go with the buyer to the DMV to make sure everything goes smoothly (only 1 guy said yes...out of all the deals). I provide the signed and correctly filled out title and the inspection sticker/paperwork and that's all the DMV ever seems to need. The one guy wanted the bill of sale-(his loan company wanted it really) so we did a bill of sale too.

Just have all your ducks in a row and be pleasant and they usually don't give you a hassle.

Good luck.

If I were you I'd get all the details of the bike (ever dropped? milage? condition?...) and tell the guy that you're coming out there with the money and if it's not everything he says it is you're walking!  If you're 5hrs away get the guy to drive half way so if he's giving you shaZam! about the condition it'll be his loss too.  That way you'll be less likely the be fed shaZam! about the state of the bike

Well, I havent been to the DMV but I did buy the bike. It have only a few very small scratches. Lookes Very Nice, and not a spot of rust. The 5 hour drive was not a problem because it was only 35 mins away from my moms house. Got ot for $1600 with helmet.
