Title: Cheap footpeg upgrade
Post by: philward on December 14, 2007, 04:51:00 AM
Hi all,

I have recently upgraded my stock pegs for some sportier aluminium ones - did a little search and noticed that there is very little information kicking around about exactly what will fit, what can be modified to fit and most importantly how to do it!  :icon_mrgreen:

I've made an addition to the Wiki entry on pegs detailing my experience.

http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/Pegs (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/Pegs)

Enjoy!

Just ordered myself a chrome and black set.

$51 Australian for both (includes $25 US postage)

I am going to use my rubber pegs for touring, and my aluminium ones for spirited rides and track days.

Thanks for the heads up!

awesome find man, seems pretty simple to install.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SUZUKI-GSXR-600-750-TL-1000-CHROME-REAR-FOOT-PEGS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35588QQihZ008QQitemZ180194887465QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

are these the same ones?  I don't see that "hump" you have to grind off in the pics.  might be a weird angle...

also can you replace the rear pegs on the gs500 with these also?

Yes, those look like the ones.  I have drawn the hump in the pegs you are looking at (below).

It wants to be ground close to flat with the surrounding metal - if you leave a slight raised section then you can always test-fit.  Its easier to take away metal than it is to put it back! ;) Check out my pegs below for the after shot.

I have not worked out how to fit the rear pegs.  I believe they will fit but the difficulty is on the flip-up-flip-down action.  The stock pegs use the rubber of the pegs to compress to provide this action - obviously this doesnt work for metal pegs.  I'm sure that it is possible to come up with a solution (perhaps using rubber washers for the rears, to provide friction to keep them in the up position, and a little bit of grinding on the brackets to allow 90-degree movement?).  Either way, that's a challenge for another day!  :icon_mrgreen:

i just typed in what he had and that exact one came up... probably all the same guy on ebay selling one batch.

Seems a bit expensive for just replacement pegs,  I just snagged some gsxr 600 rearsets for $60....

but those pegs do look nice.

oh man thanks for your prompt reply!

I can't wait to put these on now..

I decided to go with the black ones...
there's nothing else "chrome" on the bike, so it'd look awkward..

Can't beat $15 shipped for a set of pegs!

I replaced my front and rear pegs (the stock are much more functional!) with these new pegs.

4 new pegs weighed in a 300 grams

the 4 stock pegs weighed 920 grams

So it's a saving of over half a kilogram (0.62 kg)  :thumb:

got my pegs in the mail today.

ground off that little hump pretty painlessly using a dremel and grinding bit.

I pulled the first stock peg off and DAMN those things are heavy !  lol.

Both front pegs went on without problems.  I can't fold them up, but don't ever need to.  it being Christmas eve at 6pm, I doubt I'll be able to find some washers as recommended, so I'll get those another day.

I was thinking about grinding off the square corners on the brackets the pegs bolt to..  maybe if they're rounded off slightly, the pegs will be able to fold up and stay up.  Something I'll experiment with for the back pegs :D

Great to hear that people are having a crack (and success) with the mod!

The front ones do move a bit - not as much a stock, but enough to avoid a serious grounding incident if you over-lean.  I'd love to hear how you get on with grinding the corners off the brackets, especially for the rears - it'd be great to have matching fronts and backs!  :thumb:
Title: Re: Cheap footpeg upgrade
Post by: mattress on December 25, 2007, 06:37:18 PM
I tested things out with the front.  I don't think I'd ever need the front pegs to stay in the upright position, so I figured I'd give it a go.

I took my dremel with a grinding wheel and just barely rounded the square corner off the bracket.

I was able to move the peg up and down with a little oomph..  and after folding them up and down a few times, they won't stay up anymore, so I guess the metal wore down a little bit more each time I put the pegs up and down.

I wouldn't trust this for a permanent solution for the rears..  still not sure how we'd keep em up right.  How do other bikes do it?

I was thinking perhaps using rubber washers for the rear in the place of the metal ones used at the front.  You know like the washers you might find in the plumbing section of the hardware store, squeezed in nice and tight.  That way they'd have friction moving up and down - and thereby stay in the required position.

in my former bike  they used a coiled spring to hold em in the upright position

im talking about the rears, it seems easy to install so they are always up

cant take pics because dont own that bike anymore but,  i remember seeing that

I managed to install the back ones but they required some extra modifications.

I will post some photos later to show what I did.
Title: Re: Cheap footpeg upgrade

Here they are used as a rear pegs

Now they needed a touch of modifying to get them to work as rear pegs. The peg when rotated forward wont stop in position and want s to keep rotating forward. It needs a stopper put in place.

1. Grind the circular flange so its flat like the body of the peg

2. Remove old pegs. Keep the pin and circ clip

3. Position the new peg in the bikes peg bracket in the position where it is when it will be in use (outwards)

4. mark the pegs location.

5. drill a hole for a bolt or thick split pin to ensure the rear footpeg wont rotate past that position

6. insert and secure the bolt with a nut or split the ends of the split pin

7. put a think(ish) washer under the peg to tighten up the peg in the bracket

8. put the pin and circlip back in through the bracket and peg

9. Enjoy!!!

Note: I highly recommend the stock pegs for touring (they improve foot comfort), and the new pegs for sporty riding (they improve input and feel).

I don't know if I'm looking at it incorrectly, but won't the split pin stop the peg from folding out flat? :dunno_white:
Also, do the front pegs fold up and down like stock?

It looks like the pegs would be angled up a little bit.

I'm only asking because I like your solution for the foot pegs and am considering it myself.

It looks a lot better than the stock foot pegs  :thumb:

Thanks

I just picked up 4 used stock gsxr 750 pegs from my local salvage yard for $10 total  :icon_mrgreen:. Their the all aluminum ones, gonna polish up real nice. They have more available if anyones interested, apparently their just taking up space. I'll post some pics after i polish and install them.

Yes they fold up and down - although not as much as stock.  If you want them to fold further then its easy to do, just requires rounding the top corners of the 'pocket' that they fit into.

They would be angled up if you fitted them without modification - but that is why you grind the 'hump'.

Also - dont forget that you need to be using passenger pegs for both the front and rear.

All these details are well covered and explained in the wiki entry.  :thumb:

Nope the split pin just stops the peg from travelling too far forward. I'll take another pic with the peg extended.  :thumb:

I just did the swap.  They seem to support my 235lbs frame pretty well.  The mounting block is just cast aluminum, but seems strong enough to handle the job.

what do you want to know?

I ride with mine without adjusting the brake lever position, but it is now closer to your foot that before which I actually prefer as it allows you to get on the brakes easier.

I did adjust mine - I found that I had to lift my foot up to get to the brake.  Now I don't.

At the end of the day, it's not an issue either way - adjusting the pedal position is a 2 minute operation (loosen a nut, tighten a nut).  So just bung the new pegs on and make any adjustment you feel is necessary.

If they're just glued I would assume you could still pull them down if you had to, and they would just stay down till you glue them back up. :dunno_white:

I was thinking, use the split pins to make them usable, but use the glue to keep them up till you need them. Not that I would, but you could.

Hey Everyone, finally finished doing this mod, thought i would post my pics...

I did all four, (2 front and 2 passanger pegs)

(http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/1052/p2010051io7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

A little comparison picture

(http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/6533/p2010063wg9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Comparison on the bike

(http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/4321/p2010061mk3.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

This shows where you have to grind to make the front work

(http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/9528/p2010059ir8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

This is how i fixed the back pegs.
-Instead of drilling a whole, i cut a bolt to fit inside and just welded each side to hold it solid.

(http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/3323/p2170028lp1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Close up.

(http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/4192/p2170030sa2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

I know this method isn't for everyone, but i like it cause you dont have whole in it, so from the outside it looks cleaner.

Anyways, i hope this helps someone out, maybe make it a little clearer whats going on....

I really like this mod, they feel really good and hold my feet alot better, plus hey, they drop like 5 pounds off the bike (haha, i think its actually like 2 but if feels like a lot when your holding them in your hands) every little bit helps.

I didn't want to do any sort of welding or permanent mod for when touring the stock pegs are fantastic. They don't transfer as much vibration from the bike to your feet. But if your going to stick to your new pegs, this is a better way to go.
Title: Re: Cheap footpeg upgrade
Post by: Fast Jetta 97 on February 24, 2008, 10:34:04 AM
well i mean, its semi permanent. all i have to do to go back is grind that peg off and replace the stock ones.  The front ones can be traded back at any moment, the passangers take just that extra second to grind it out, but yes, its not a perfect set up.

If my bike wasn't in the garage right now I'd be asking if any of you wanted to send your old stock pegs my way, since my stock pegs are getting pretty worn down.  Personally I don't mind the "clunky but functional" look...it's why I'm riding a GS500 in the first place instead of a Ducati Monster.  That and I'm a poor grad student.

OK, I know I'm bringing back a zombie post.  But is anyone that did this mod still around?  How do these pegs hold up in longevity?  Any probs a year later?

Mine were the first pegs for this mod and they are still going strong.  I was concerned that the black anodizing might not wear well, bet very little of it has come off.  :thumb: They look (and perform) very much like day 1.  Very happy with this mod.

I can't remember what I searched for but the wiki has the term you need to search ebay for.  Its something like gsxr 1000 rear set or something.  If you goto the wiki and look under the upgrades section, the check the sections for pegs its all laid out right there.

Thanks,

Nick

Here they are used as a rear pegs

Now they needed a touch of modifying to get them to work as rear pegs. The peg when rotated forward wont stop in position and want s to keep rotating forward. It needs a stopper put in place.

1. Grind the circular flange so its flat like the body of the peg

What is the circular flange portion of the peg? Are they ground the same as the front pegs?
