Title: Changing Tachometer on '93 GS 500 w/ '05 model.
Post by: substudio on December 15, 2007, 08:21:07 PM
Hello All,

I bought a newer looking Gauge cluster on ebay and noticed that the tachometer is electric and not cable driven like my '93 GS is.

Is there any way i can convert this to an electric set??

I thought I'd be able to replace the set with newer ones, since the original set was damaged from the years of exposure to the sunlight from the previous owner.

Use the black/yellow wire on the right coil for the signal for the tach. Not sure if there are additional requirements for positive or negative, just run wires accordingly.

well, the yellow wire is taken care of but what do i do to the black/red lead??

i glanced at the 2004 wiring diagram and the 90-96 diagram I noticed that the difference in the tach. lied in the ignition control unit

so, would i need a 2004 ignition control unit in order to operate the tach on my 93'????

The Black/Red is the signal from the 04+ ICU. The Black/Red on the tach needs to be connected to the Black/Yellow wire on the right coil.

No... unless you want to replace additional electrical components.

Right coil??

is that the RH ignition coil and spark plug that I see on the 90-96 wiring diagram?

Correct.

I have 3 bikes wired this way with different electronic gauges, 2 from SV's and the other from a Katana.

Okay,

so I finally got a chance to get started connecting my new cluster.

I just want to make sure im doing this right...

I have two wires that remain to be connected from the electric tach; the gray and the orange.

My question: can i connect my extra 2 leads (gray/ orange) to the same colored wires that I've already connected?

I hope this makes sense...
I can show pics later if needed.

Thanks for all your help!!!

so i connected all the black/white wires from the tach to the hi beam indicator light and got the indigo LED's on the gauges to work. :icon_razz:

so now im assuming i can do the same with the orange wire from the tach to the oil and neutral indicators.... :thumb:

I just did the same swap with my 89 GS.
I used the connector off the old cluster and spliced all the wires from the new gauges into it.
Except the black/red. I ran a wire from the right coil to it just like Dgyver said :thumb:
There were a couple gray and black/white wires that connected to the single gray and black/white wires on the connector. Other than that it was single wires connected to the matching wire on the older connector.
I just plugged it into the wire harness.
Everything works great
Tach works, lights work, even the high beam light comes on when I move the switch (I don't have headlights with high beams).
I might get some of those indigo lights. They look pretty cool O0

Yeah, if you're ever interested in the indigo 5 direction LED'S I found them on ebay #280182124730  ($9.99 US) + shipping and handling

I live in Southern California and it only took me a few days to have them arrive via US mail.

I'm glad I put this cluster together.

I can continue working on other things of my project GS like synching the carbs.

I bought a set of the blue leds from the ebay site. Haven't recieved them yet.
Thanks for the link. they have alot of nice items for cheap.
I'm getting some of those 36 led squares to use in my sailboat. :thumb:
They have a 2" wire with a connector for a wedge bulb socket.
I'll cut off the connector and wire them directly to a switch.
I found some nice little round switches on ebay too. I love ebay :kiss3:
