Title: Build Device - Keep bike upright without kickstand or centerstand (trackday)
Post by: tussey on December 17, 2007, 02:04:05 PM
Looking for ideas/hints/suggestions on building a stand to keep the bike upright when I have the kickstand and centerstand strapped up.

I was thinking some sort of frame that would brace the sides of the bike near the engine.

1. Bolt spools to the swing arm and use a rear stand.

2. Make a stand (triangle or T) with a rod at the top that fits in one of the frame holes. If you have fixed pegs, use a tube that slides over the peg with a triangle or T base. I had one on my race SV. I am sure I have pics if needed. These are easy to use but have limited stability. Similar to what are used with dirt bikes.

prop it up with a 2x4  works just as well.       ALthough i do agree with dgyver  a t stand type used for dirt bikes would be a good idea.. Of if you wanted you could use both sides of the rear axle bolt and have a made up frame connect to it.

1 or 2 tie downs attached to bike and back bumper
make a rear stand out of steel....less than 10 bucks + welding

why not just buy a Trackstand?

T-Rex makes a set thats pretty cheap, that doesn't require spools (although its nicer if you have them) and a front stand... I think the pair was 229 shipped?

Here is the stand I made for my SV. I have something similar for my GS. If I was alone at the track, I would use this to get off the bike and then use a rear stand to secure it. The stand slides over the fixed foot peg.

What about something like this ( get a piece of diamond plate or something to bolt it to so it sits on the ground and is stable...:

Stand (http://item.express.ebay.com/Vehicle-Parts-Accessories___NEW-MOTORCYCLE-WHEEL-CHOCK-Stand-Trailer-Scooter_W0QQitemZ280183885304QQihZ018QQddnZVehicleQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQddiZ1168QQcmdZExpressItem)

It's for transporting bikes actually...but I think it'd work ok on it own with a base...( and a pin to keep it from rolling back out on it's own- but it looks like you'd have to try to make it go back...)

I've been wanting to get one and secure it to a plate that fits the front half of the  bed of my truck...so I don't have to bolt it to my bed and can remove it when I don't need it...

More.... Yes these are meant for trailers but again i think they could be made portable with a small base plate added for stability...

Wheel Chock (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-wheel-chock/wheel-chock-on-trailer.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-wheel-chock/&h=225&w=300&sz=58&tbnid=OzdXbyc2KYRj6M:&tbnh=87&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmotorcycle%2Bwheel%2Bchock%26um%3D1&start=1&sa=X&oi=images&ct=image&cd=1)
Some More Chocks ( some cool ones..) (http://www.rampconnection.com/page10.shtml)

Hell they Even have a ready made one...( after looking some more..)-but they sell the chock and stand seperately...( so make your own base...Diamond plate doesn't cost that much...Hell --Plywood and some paint...)
Floor stand  (http://www.rampconnection.com/page21.shtml)

If I was alone at the track, I would use this to get off the bike and then use a rear stand to secure it.

When I'm in a hurry and going to use the centerstand, I get off the GS without bothering with the sidestand.  I wouldn't recommend doing that with a heavy or expensive bike, tho.

Tough to do when the center stand is removed and the side stand is secured so it cannot be lowered or at least removed. Neither are needed and sometimes required to be removed to ride on the track.

Resurrecting this thread.....

I had a Harbor Freight Gift card to burn up...so While I was there I decided to get/Try this ..

I'll be making a plate to fit in the bed of my truck so it's removeable... When it's out It can just sit flat and be used as is.

125/250 GP 2-strokes use them. Probably best to custom make it to fit your application.
