There was a dealer in charlotte (off freedom drive) where I'd stop by often and usually every sentence will end with "fitted on to a GS 500".
Example: Ooooo ... this can be machined and cut and welded here and ground and trimmed there and quartered and iced and julienned and ... fitted onto a GS500.
This sounds like one of those projects.
GS500 trike anyone ??
Cool.
Srinath.

the bike is hanging from the back deck with the frame broke in two

I have not measured a dang thing

just threw it out to see if it would stick on the wall.....like Srinaths' underoos

engine looks good except the throttle bodies are pretty beat up

I wonder if it will bolt into a 600 frame....????

Sounds like a fun sleeper project, as long as you put 600 plastics back on it :icon_twisted:

the GSXR 1000 motor will bolt into a 750 frame with no problems. seems it shouldnt be too difficult to put in a 600 frame. sounds like fun trying!!   :thumb:

I know all the old SRAD motors are swappable, that's why I'm half keeping an eye out for a 750 engine :icon_twisted:

I apologize in advance for hijacking your thread, Ken - but I don't think you'll mind. I'll edit/delete if it rubs ya the wrong way (like the pavement at VIR!)

I've got a brand new, in the crate from Yamaha, zero mile, never been installed in a bike Yamaha FZ-1 motor in my shop. Bought it for a half baked project I now have no time for. 1,500 bucks if anyone is interested. It's complete with carbs and everything. I also have a complete, brand new, still in the plastic wiring harness, airbox, and everything else to make it run that I'll send out the door for an additional 200 bucks.

not all motors are bolt on for a srad. the 750 96-99 is a direct bolt on. The 98-99 need the FI tank from what i've read.  I have a 97 750 motor in my 91 bandit 400. now thats a sleeper.  there were so few of my bikes made that know one knows what the motor should look like. I'm killing people on roll-ons.
the 2k+ needs some brackets made.

I will have an extra 750 motor (complete with everything) in about a week or two.  I was building another 400 bandit w/750 but I bought a dr650 motor instead. just let me know.

Title: Re: rear wheel swap for the friggin crazy....
Post by: octane on December 27, 2007, 08:41:18 AM
I think everyone who knew about it wondered if I'd ever get the XS done. I'm going to throw the frame in my attic...just in case I find myself in need of a project someday. I already put a 'busa front end on it - done right with a custom aluminum stem...yadda yadda. Maybe someday I'll get around to doing the 'busa swingarm/monoshock swap too....damn it, I'm setting up projects again!

I also found a NOS tail/seat and a good used tank...both of which are tough to find for a XS11 Standard. Those will get sold though, I need the cash. The motor is proving to be a tough sell though...nobody wants a FZ motor and few realize it's just an R1 mill with milder cams. And the damn thing has zero miles for Pete's sake! So, that may also end up stored for a while...though I can really use that money, so hopefully somebody will pick it up.

Title: Re: rear wheel swap for the friggin crazy....
Post by: octane on December 27, 2007, 08:50:40 AM
Yeah, hit the FZ board, nothing yet. I don't really want to ship this big ass crate...so I really haven't been trying TOO hard to sell it. I posted on CL hoping someone local would pop up - or somebody I can meet within 100 miles or so for a swap.

XS, XS what 1100 ... I got a XJ1100 ... tranny trouble. However that is endemic to all 4 cyl XS'es and XJ's and only the 1100 is worth fixing, cos it can be done wihtout splitting the cases. Anyway, you have a USD on it ??? and an FZ motor to fit in it ??? Yikes. That thing is a humongous pig of a motor though.
Cool.

Yup, it was ambitious from the start - XS11 Standard. I have a habit of starting with whatever junk I have and then overcompensating - and overspending - to fix the deficiencies...hence my old GS. I had a nice, straight XS11 with a blown motor. So I parted it and kept the frame...did some measuring, made a stem and grafted on the busa USD front end...looked right. So I got a busa swingarm and wheels...mocked it up...looks good, but will need to extend the subframe to make the body lines flow. Then I found a spec race car manufacturer selling these FZ crate motors because their new cars used Rotax motors, and my old man had recently passed and left me a few dollars, so I took advantage and bought the motor. Then the wife got pregnant and we needed a bigger house, so the garage went into storage while the house was being shown, house sold, bought new house, moved, got a new job, had a baby, wife ruptures a disc and gets spinal surgery - and our lives turn into complete madness! So, as I was telling Ken earlier...the projects and parts stash is being liquidated to buy a nice, newer, reliable bike!

Why do you do this to me?! You know I've been wanting to build an early Hemi powered hot rod! And that would look so right in my '40 Plymouth! Damn you!! I already have 8 motors littering my garage though...need anything? I'll sell 'em cheap! Two LA Mopar small blocks, 351Windsor, 302 w/C4, Flathead Ford V8, Ford 352FE, Chrysler Flathead 6, and the FZ mill...oh, and the tired ol GS motor - nine!

Yes. that is I.   DR motor  because its a cheap motor... plain and simple. I was hoping the bandit frame would be much lighter than the gs 500 frame. but they weight the same somehow.  plus it is easier to swap parts on it. ex:  gsxr front and swap , 160 rear tire. , neater looking frame./
I have the gs frame here that is ready for a dr motor to be dropped into it.  mounts are made from when I had a different dr motor in it before. just need the motor.

Yup, Bandit has a taller neck that accomodates the longer GSF and GSX-R stems without the hassle of making a stem or machining one down, or pressing one out for the GS. Plus, with the engine as a suspended member instead of in a cradle frame like the GS I'd think solving exhaust clearances and things of that nature would be easier with the Bandit frame. And of course the B4 frame is just sexy! Looks like a mini Duc.

ok......let me take a stab at it...... Are you telling me you have dr 650 motor in a gs frame? and if you do are you calling it a GR 650 now?.

It took me a while to come up with that. so I hope i'm close.   oh and if I am. did you get it from Ken? I talked to him a couple of years ago and I think he had a dr650 motor in something I can't remember what though. I think it was his race bike.
Title: Re: rear wheel swap for the friggin crazy....
Post by: spc on December 27, 2007, 08:35:58 PM
No, the S-man is telling you that you want a GR motor and not a DR motor.  I believe the GR is significantly easier to rig into a GS frame than the DR, but Werease, Srinath and Dgyver are definitely the one's to confirm this for sure.

Title: Re: rear wheel swap for the friggin crazy....
Post by: The Buddha on December 28, 2007, 07:19:58 AM
The GR was made 83 and 84 and is a 650 motor that even looks like the GS motor. Sorta direct fit. Light mods only to the frame. 2 of the 4 motor mounts fit it. Its a 2 cyl. I doubt it will rev as much but make more torque I think.
Cool.
Srinath.
Title: Re: rear wheel swap for the friggin crazy....
Post by: albertinhouston on December 28, 2007, 08:49:54 AM
you know I just saw one of those on ebay. But it was a motor only no other parts so I didn't give it a second thought. I'm looking to use a single though....
Title: Re: rear wheel swap for the friggin crazy....
Post by: The Buddha on December 28, 2007, 10:24:32 AM
Yea, a DR 650 types will prolly be more fun. The DR motor while is much taller than the GR, you dont have to yank the valve cover off to do valves, its got the little port type things to get to them. You dont have to cut the T brace and make it un boltable like I did. The DR also is lighter and some of the newer ones are pretty high performance.
GR motor is heavier than GS and the thing prolly is more torque, not neccesarily more power. The real benifit comes when you overbote the thing. I know of someone who is building an 851 off a GR motor.
Cool.
Srinath.
