Title: Gear
Post by: darb85 on January 06, 2008, 11:38:50 PM
When  I first started riding, a member here,Nick, Niceguysfinishlast, Told me to buy as much gear as possible and i followed his advice.  Im glad i did, but recently I realized that I have become a gear nazi and its raised a question within myself.

Why do we care what other people chose to do?  we may not agree, but why do we ridicule them?  We can reccomend that they buy gear.  but why do we yell at them?  why do we decide that they are worthless people?

Now, that being said, I believe you should wear all the gear you can afford, but Ive decided that I will no longer ridicule them, suggest they wear gear more than once.

Still dont think its a good idea not to wear gear, but if you dont its your choice, have at it.

Wanna Ride?

Brad

I don't ridicule anyone over gear.  I will definitely suggest it, but if they don't want it, it is their body.  My only stipulation is that I won't ride with people not in gear.  If someone I'm riding with goes down, I'd like for there to be as little injury as possible.

I saw a guy on an 01-03 Gix the other day with a brand new Suzuki leather race replica jacket on.............unzipped..............and no helmet.  I just looked at him and waved right before he attempted and failed to wheelie.

We see wearing gear as a common sense thing.  In most other cases where people are lacking common sense, they're ridiculed.  So I think it's the same thing with wearing gear.

I always wear a helmet, gloves, jacket, and boots.  If I do any riding besides just around town under 35-40 mph I'll wear motorcycle pants too.

I view the overpants as kind of "meh".  It's an extra thing to take off if I want to go into a store or something.  However, I'm not at all confident in the ability of my jeans to protect me from road rash.  I've seen a few people with road rash and it just looks much too painful for me.

I'm probably going to break down and grab a pair or two of Draggin Jeans soon.  I wear Icon field armor on my legs for daily riding and usually don't even worry about taking it off when I go into a store

I have crashed wearing them and have been more than impressed with the protection.  They are not canvas. Cotton tripple stiched and reinforced where it matters.  Thnis is from experience

I hate gearing up. I don't hate gear, I just don't like how dang long it takes to put on, and how cumbersome it is when off the bike. I rode back when it was just jeans and a t-shirt and a jacket and we were too young to think we needed helmets around town. Later I wore boots and a helmet and a "heavy"  jacket on the fwy. I miss the "freedom". BUT, I never went down on asphalt, and WOW, am I GLAD! My hubby is a superb rider, and he did a simple tight circle on his XL350 in our cul de sac, basically a quick pivot, forgetting he had a new front tire on. The front slid like it was on ice. He left like 8 inches of levis and kneecap skin and blood embedded in the pavement, and has a big scar there now, on top of earlier scars from going down in dirt on mountain bikes.

I wear Joe Rocket armored stuff:  thick Ballistic jacket with a CE back protector, double elbow pads, and shoulder pads and kidney pads and keep it zipped. I wear the pants too with knee armor and hip pads OVER my jeans in the winter, over bike shorts or jean shorts in the summer. I wear a helmet of course, full face with a shield, full gloves with skid protection on the knuckles and fingers, and moto boots that go up over the ankle. Every time I go out. So I no, I don't ride to the market because I can walk the four blocks faster than I can warm up the bike! But if I was gonna take it to the library 20 blocks away, I'd still wear full gear. I would not want to ride with someone who didn't. I can NOT understand guys riding around in shorts and flipflops! Or women perched 9 feet in the air on the back of a supersport in a tank top and cutoffs...   :cookoo:  :cookoo:  :cookoo: !

But the thing that pisses me off the most isn't that they might win a Darwin Award, it's that they might SURVIVE, and their medical bills for their stay in the vegetable garden raise MY premiums!!!  :nono:  It's not that I wouldn't have compassion for any motorcyclist who goes down, but I wonder how they think that they are never going down???

I almost bought a slimmer Alpinestars leather sportbike style jacket, but it didn't have full back armor, and it's a woman's jacket, so the armor isn't as robust. So I didn't buy it. I could get the armor separately, but it would change the fit of the jacket, and it wouldn't fit as well.

I love those Icon leg protectors, those with Draggin Jeans might be nice for summer. Would definitely LOOK better, but I'd rather be safe than look kewl. I was the opposite for too long, I'm probably on my 9th life by now. I still have a pair of Alpinestars tech 4s size 6 mens if any of the ladies need a good motocross boot, I can't ride in the things, at least on the street. They are comfortable but I can't feel the controls well enough. I was keeping them for dirt, but doesn't look like that will happen.

Frankie, I'm interested.  Where did you get yours, what should I look for if I see a pair of what appears to be combat pants?  Just the triple stitches?  Thickness?  Any tips?

I'd be interested to see some denier numbers for combat pants.
