Title: Helmet hair
Post by: Yohan on August 16, 2003, 03:07:43 PM
How do you guys deal with the helmet hair problem? I'm not obsessed with my hairstyle, mind you, but it WILL be my Senior year and I'd hate to goto school everyday and have ape hair. How do ya'll deal with it? Would it be ok to gel the hair and then wear helmet or will it get all sticky and nasty?

</dumb question>

Not a dumb question. In order to feel good, you must look good. In my case looking good is looking like Colin Quinn.

Find a good Barber with younger folks cutting hair. Not at a salon, a Barber. Ask for it short on the sides and back (tell them a 3 and 3/4 blade and they'll know what you mean) with enough on the top that you can mess it up with gel. Keep the sideburns longer for that rebel biker touch.

After the shower, and your hair is towel dried, put a little gel in it and then push it forward from the back. Not plastered, just enough to control it.

Fool proof. Looks like a real haircut and never looks like helmet head.

It's either that or grow it long enough to do the greaser comb-it-straight-back look.

I do what banjo said.  keep your hair short, but just long enough so you can still style it a little.  I also carry a small tub of palmade in my tank bag.  just get your hands wet, then put a little bit of that in your hair and the helmet head goes right away.

I bring a hat with me and wear it. Or if I have to go to work or something I have some gel there and fix it up there.

I don't ever use gel if my helmet is going on so it doesn't get all nasty.

You can just get there a little early and fix up your hair in the bathroom.  For the ride home just throw on a bandana or doo rag or something.

Sometimes my hair actually looks better with helmet hair  :?

i get mine cut down to a 2 on the sides and back.  The top is a couple inches or a bit shorter.  I usually tell the barber "2 fingers" for the top.  They seem to understand lol

Take a look at my picture and try and guess why I don't have any simpathy for you guys and your helmet hair.

And, no, there's no skullet sprouting out the back. I cut that off sometime in the mid-90's. I am sometimes tempted to grow it out really long and attempt the world's worst comb-over, though.

Ok, i have Hair long enough when in a tail reachs my beltline, i wear skull caps most of the time. when something requires its removal like weddings, funnerals, court hearings, ect ect i pop off the skull cap, wet the hands at a water foutain/sink and give it the ole double handed slickback.  I keep it on at work as it doubles as a sweat catcher too.... besides, the skull cap keeps the sun from burning the top of my head, its alittle thin on very top and tward front, Damn genetics......J/k i woudlnt mind shaving it down to crew cut or totaly bald, but wife threatend me with bodly harm/dismemberment and well,  Some one explain to me WHY chics would feel compeled to play with my hair? I dont really mind it i guess, but cant shake the feeling of being a large bearded Barbie when they do.i had one take my hair down, run fingers through it, brush it out, braid it in 3 different styles, then i had to argue for 20 mins to reclaim it so i could leave.

I don't know, I had a prof who had done wonders with a single sideburn. He came to class one rainy day with a sideburn dangling to his shirt pocket, I spent an hour and a half staring intently at my notes so I wouldn't laugh.

I keep my hair fairly short, but not short enough to avoid helmet hair. I just got a Buff  http://www.buffusa.com (don't leave off the USA <shudder>). It doesn't fix the helmet hair, but it does hide it. I also keep a baseball cap in my tank bag.

Clipped down to a 1/4 inch here.  Helmet head is not a problem.  I swam when I was in highschool, so I always had a shaved head, anyway.
