So, it's now 2008, and my mind is already wandering to warmer days and the prospect of riding some fine Tennessee / North Carolina roads. I'm already planning a trip to Deals Gap, and I have a suggestion.
The last couple of years, the 'rally' that we've planned hasn't drawn many of our members (last year I was in Tennessee for the meet, but had to return home unexpectedly due to my grandmother's death). However, I had the opportunity last year to meet with members of thegsresources.com at their Brown County Rally in Indiana.
It was a great experience, and there was a wide variety of bikes, mostly classic GS Suzukis, and people there. There were about 30+ people in attendance, and the experience was fantastic. I found out about their Brown County rally mere days before the event started, and I didn't have time to register, so I just 'crashed' the rally at the meeting point for the first days ride. They welcomed me right in, grouped me with four or five other riders, gave me a route map, and we rode all day. They accepted me in like we'd known each other for years. Great people.
Anyway, my suggestion is to combine our rally with theirs (June 5th - 8th). They've already done a lot of planning, scouted routes, and worked out accomodations. Obviously, we newer GS people (1999-2007) could opt to ride together, or we could join in with the collective, but it would give us many more options.
If you guys are interested their meet and greet threads are located at http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/forumdisplay.php?f=107
That page also discusses several other rallys that they are hosting in different parts of the country. Check them out if their in your area.
btw, this is not a plug for thegsresources, it's simply an idea for a more unified and successful rally this year.
So, whattaya think? Anyone up for the Dragon this year?
I'm absolutely in, my schedule is rather flexible overall.
you know, haven't been on the forums in like 6 months and haven't been on any group rides for probably two years. i was just thinking that it would be pretty awesome if i could round up some folks and hit the dragon. i'll mark my calendar. hopefully i can make it.
Just thought I would say hello here. I'm Al Jones, I ride a 1982 GS850 and I'm one of the rally coordinators for Brown County, as I only live about one hour from the southern Indiana twisties. I just bought a 2001 GS500 for my wife to ride. She rode her Honda 400 at last years rally and has sadly (for her) outgrown it. I believe the GS500 will be exactly what she needs to experience the road more fully.
I also to point out that the group of us over at thegsresources.com have quite a few rallys throughout the year. Brown County Starts it off in May, then we have one in North Carolina, West Virgina, New York, one in the Western States, and last but not least (one of my personal favorites), one in Wisconsin in October. If any of you guys are interested in attending one of these events please do. Thats what this is all about. Talking about tires, stators, and oh yeah, lots of corner carving.
We run all of these events pretty loose. We are not a very organized bunch, but then again, i think thats what makes it work. Its a vacation for me and my wife to enjoy. Map and a loose agenda is usually offered but you ride the road you point that bike down.
Feel free to contact me at awjonesii@gmail.com if your interested in attending or jsut simply go to the site.
Now with that said - anyone have a crankshaft that would fit a 2001 GS500. The one I have seems to be locked up.
Thanks,
Al Jones
i have it in my head to make it too as many rides as i can this year. the reason being is that i may not have many more rides left in me. so if i can i will be there
if i can get ahold of a bike, im in. lol but as of now, im bike-less
Ok, so for those of you that are more action than talk, you can sign up for the Southeastern GS rally here: http://northcarolina.gsrallies.com/?page=signup
for all of yall north of me , are any of you coming through VA? I gotta double check my schedule but I should be in . and I am sure I can bring a long fed ex mike. he has moved on to a R6 but he is still fun to ride with ;)
depending on the dates I would be in, I reside in Blacksburg so its not that much of a hike for me.s
I missed last years meet at deals gap because of a wreck.I was almost there and traffic stopped.I sat on the highway for 2 hours waiting for traffic to move.I can't make any promises but I plan to be there. My bike is currently going through service and upgrades.I'm in upstate SC,so I'm about 2 hours from Deals Gap.
maybe we can get together a big convoy :)
Anythang is possybil.
Less than three months away. Time to start making definite plans if you intend to stay in the area. C'mon guys and gals, who's going to make the trip this year?
considering it.....
If I talked a friend into it, who doesn't have a GS500 (he's got a GSXR), how out of place would he be? Are there other sport bikes that show up?

I'm going to go and i'm going to bring a another GStwin rider who moved up to a 06 R6
Hey, for those of you that are going, follow this link to sign up:

It's not necessary to sign up, but it makes it easier than going back through all the posts to see who was planning to go.

Awesome...it's starting to sound like a rally. Now go recruit others! :thumb:
I don't know any local riders. All the sport bike guys are pricks and the HD guys are A holes. :icon_rolleyes:
Squids and douchenuggets here.
I saw a guy riding a brand freakin new S2R today, with absolutely no gear or helmet. I guess he thought he looked cool, he looked like a moron especially when he almost dropped it at a light.
I'll still be in school. Probably taking finals, even worse. I'll be thinking of you guys, shredding up the dragon. Maybe next year...
Who goes to school on Saturday??? Ride out Friday eve! :thumb:
Skip school, it'll be alright I swear.
You know now that I think about it, I probably could. Leave Thursday, won't be learning anything in class. Come back Sunday, screw studying. All my classes are easy A's anyway.

So far, there are four of us from GStwins.com signed up on the roster HERE (http://northcarolina.gsrallies.com/index.php?page=index)
Lodging will fill up quick unless you are planning to camp or something (I think I am).
If you are still thinking about it...get off the fence and sign up! The more the merrier, right? Killboy.com front page is always dominated by R6s, CBRs, Ducatis, Ninjas, GSXRs, etc. Let's represent! :icon_lol:

Most likely next year
I'm playing with the idea of going. I'd def. camp if I do.

I had asked off the last weekend in May but my plans have been cancelled. I will see if I can change my request for June 6-8 off. Either Sat or Sun would work for me, which ever day the most people from here will be there.
Got my schedule changed today. Will be off June 6-8. Planning on a Sat day trip. Probably trailer the bike, save up for the fun stuff.

I am coming with you if at all possible. As long as everyone is well, the G/F's work schedual doesn't change, and it don't rain.
Four weeks remain folks...hope everyone is gearin' up to go! I can't hardly wait! I don't know about you all, but I have to check in to killboy.com every Wednesday just to get my Deals Gap fix.
My plans are relatively finalized. The wife, daughter and I are trailering the bike down on Thursday. We're staying in Gatlinburg Thursday night and hangin out. Friday we will spend the morning together, eat lunch in G'burg, then I'm heading over to the Gap. I plan to get to the crossroads of time by about 1:00 PM. I'm gonna grab a campsight, and pitch a tent. After that, I'm up for anything (on my bike-can't swing dirt bike rentals ). I'll be camping Friday and Saturday night, then heading back to G'burg Sunday morning and vacationing there with the family until Wednesday. :thumb:
Has there been a time & place to meet for Sat?
Nope, that's why I posted my plans. I'll be at the crossroads of time Saturday morning, is a preliminary schedule over at www.thegsresources.com , and there will be a final schedule posted as the rally approaches.

Not sure about dgyver.
Once I get my bike finished I'm done.No more mods or tear downs until I have project Lite Wait on the road.
Same here with the mods, I was thinking about doing the rearsets, but I was just like it's summer I'm just going to ride and enjoy the work I've already done. Except my valves, which I'll be checking in a few weeks.
My thermometer on my computer is saying 90, but it feels hotter. Really dry sweltering heat.
It has been too dang hot to enjoy it. Especially wearing full leathers. Need to wait until it cools off some.
Been working on some finishing touches on my 92.

Well, I'm still here in Gatlinburg, but I'm back from the Gap. It was a great time. Nate went down two miles into his first trip up the dragon. The bike was little worse for wear, but about an hour and a half at wheelers got it rideable for the rest of the rally. The weekend netted me about 400+ miles. It was a great time! I'm glad we went. I guess Terre Haute, IN (my home town) is all but under water. :o

Glad to hear the trip went well, aside from the wreck. Yeah, we've been getting some nasty storms here in the Midwest over the past week.
Send some of that rain here!
How hot was it at Deals? It has been hitting over 100 at times here. I hate I could not make it. Next time it needs to be in a cooler month.
I had a fantastic time, and the riding was superb. The weather was pretty hot on Saturday, and there were some brief periods of rain, but otherwise it was a good time. We went to hit the dragon after I dropped all my stuff off, but that was cut short when Nate went down. We got his bike roadworthy and headed off to Robbinsville to eat some tasty BBQ at Sweetwater Barbeque with the gsresources group. Later, Nate and I ran the gap from deals gap resort up to the overlook and back in the dark. Now THAT was an adreneline rush. People think the gap is a challenge in the daylight. Try it when you can't see. :thumb:
Saturday we all met in Robbinsville at 8:00 AM and headed off down 129. We went all the way in to Georgia, hit a road called wolf pen gap, and stopped for lunch at "two wheels only" From there we took 60 up to 68 back to Tellico Plains, Tennessee and across the Cherohala. We then took a little detour on Joyce Kilmer road, that turned into a crappy a$$ beating of a washboard road. Nothing like a tight switchback when your front wheel is skipping all over the place. Once we got back to 129, we headed back to the resort, and Nate packed up to see his father. I rode out to Robbinsville once again, and ate dinner with the gsresources guys at the two wheel inn. Back to the resort at about 11:30, and hit the sack.
Sunday I rose early and packed up. I felt like $h!t for some reason. I hit the dragon at about 7:30 AM to ride back to Gatlinburg. I ended up with a Harley on my butt all the way through. I was taking it easy and not breaking 40 mph since I was feeling bad, I would pull away from him in the corners, but he would glue himself to my tail every time the road straightened out. We got to the overlook and pulled over, and he said he couldn't believe how far I was leaning my bike, and he was dragging hard parts in every corner trying to keep up. :thumb:
The rest of the ride was beautiful, but uneventful, back to Gatlinburg. I'll link up some pics and vids if I get them uploaded.
I wish more of you could have been there! Maybe next year.
Oramac you picks aren't coming up. I is  cause I didn't getta go.It was 103* on one of those days.It was Hot.The heat has prevented me from finishing my bike still.High humidity along with high 90's,just don't go well with working out side in the sun.
