Title: Boston Area GS Owners/Riders
Post by: bergj1986 on January 15, 2008, 03:29:03 PM
I'm a new owner of 2002 GS500E and wanted to see who else on this forum is in the Boston area.  I'm lookin to get a group ride together once the snow/ice/slush/crap clears.  Riders of any experience level are welcome.

Details on this ride?  NYC is too far from Boston for me, know of anything closer?  Something about riding through NYC congestion and taxi's doesn't appeal to me.

I live in Lynn just north of boston but alas I'm in the middile of fixing a leaky tank and poor clutch amongst other things.  Maybe late spring of summer  I can re-learn to ride.

Good luck with the tank and clutch, it shouldn't be too hard to fix.  Let me know when you fix them and we'll go for a ride!

The New York City ride we're planning is actually in Orange County, NY, near Harriman State Park about an hour north of NYC. For those willing to trek from Massachussetts, I-84 cuts through Orange County.

Also, I plan to spend considerable time in Providence, RI this summer, so I'll check on this group again come July - September to meet for a group ride. Do keep in mind that I'm a brand spankin newbie.

Would love to but won't be up there this weekend. Any of the providence folks want to go for a ride later in the fall? I'll be there for 4 weeks in November. I don't know my way around!

Psyber,
I'll be in Providence for the fall, starting September 2009. My bike is deep in storage and in need of new tires and a tune up, but mid-September it should be ready to go. I'd love to see your moto in person--it looks amazing!

Hey, I was thinking about trying the tire swap myself, plus an oil change. Are you honestly down to help? I have tools, but I'm not savvy, and I don't have a tire bead breaker. I might just take mine to the stealership for the work... If nothing else, I'd like to come by and see your bike! I'll PM you my email address and we can set a date.

i took my wheel down to razee in N.Kingston and had them mount/balance the tire onto the wheel cost 25-30 but turn around was within 30 minutes if you go there when they open. I'll definitely help but Sept8 is when my school begins. Would have to be on a weekend or friday evening. I'll be due for some maintenance then as well.

hopefully i'll have my new riser-clipons installed so we can go ride some backroads in south county  :D

Alright, I'll ask the shop to swap the tires on. Let me know when you've got the bike ready after Sept 8 and we can go riding.    :)

also, razee price matches on tires and if  you buy them there, they mount them for free (the tire, not the wheel)

My bike is out of commission for at least a week. I'm having fuel system problems and losing out on some of the best riding days of the year!  >:(

what problems, and are you in Warwick?
Title: Re: Boston Area GS Owners/Riders

No, I'm in the east side (Mt. Hope). The bike starts and idles for 5-10 seconds, then dies as though it's out of fuel. It takes a while before it'll start again and only starts with the choke on. If I open the throttle it dies right away, and the same goes for if I close the choke. RPMs are steady at 1-1.5k for the 10 seconds that it runs, but won't climb above that despite the choke being on. My guess is it's grit, debris, or something in the hoses, shutoff valve, petcock, or carbs. The fuel is old, but I put seafoam in the tank before I winterized; if the sole problem was bad fuel it would probably run longer, but misfire. The first time I started the engine it popped/misfired, but since then it hasn't. My air filter could probably be replaced, too. I'm getting spark, even though the plugs looked slightly oil-fouled after winterization (I put some oil in the cylinders before storing in December 2008).

Regardless, I'm a guest where I'm living and don't really want to tear the bike down in their driveway, apart from the fact that I've never done it before and might make it worse. I'm trying to see if I can get help from a friend's friend before I take it to the North Providence Vespa/Aprilia shop. Really disappointing. I'm in no position to be paying a lot of money for repairs right now, especially just two months before it starts getting so cold and I have to store the bike again.  sad.

If your hosts have a lawnmower, contribute some lawnmower gas to their supply from your tank. Put at least some fresh gas in your tank. Bad gas can have weird effects.

Does setting the frame petcock on prime have any effect on the problem?

What do you get if you open the drains on the bottom of the carb bowls? - you might just have a lot of water/crud collected there that you could easily remove.

I'm about as far from the Boston area as I can be and still be in Mass, so I'm also nowhere near RI. Not too far from pastrami(sic), I guess, though we have not met in person.

i'm on the east side as well....right next to 7 stars bakery in fact (by the CVS on hope st) if you are anywhere near the YMCA/Ladd observatory then thats about a mile from me.

i have a spare garage spot (until someone moves into the second floor) and plenty of tools. LMK if you want to bring it by, i've taken my bike apart a couple times. Couldn't imagine it being any different.

we can shake down your carbs, replace the hoses and filter and dump the gas and refill w/ new. I have a spare gas can or two standing by empty if i recall.

OK OK my bike's problems have been resolved (the source of problems was me - hooray for new spark plugs and a revised fuel tank shutoff valve setting) and psyber optix officially has the coolest GS I've ever seen.  Fellow New Englanders, consider this a call to ride before the fall season ends. We have few nice days left before the region ices over.

WHO IN THE PROVIDENCE - EASTERN CT - BOSTON - SOUTHERN MASS AREA WANTS TO GO FOR A GROUP GS RIDE???

Depending on interest and locations, we could do a southern Mass ride. Respond to this post with your location and we can put a mapped ride together.
