Alright I want to underclock a pentium 4 processor drastically.
I want to go from 1500mhz to 400 mhz. is it possible?
a bit of backround infromation:
I work for a company that has a program that needs a processor at 400mhz or less. I know that you can underclock processors after your overclock them but how low can you bring it.

what he said. ive brought a dc 1800 mhz cpu to 850 but my multiplier wouldnt klet me go lower, might try jumpers, or can try a local freecycle outlet
Yea... Most multiplyers arent gonna let you get that low with that fast a CPU. If your clock speed is set in the BIOS you may be able to hack it and do something but... I would opt for getting a slow PC from the fleamarket or goodwill or something :thumb:
or find out what socket it is, and find one on ebay, which ould get you a bit closer, or with an underclocking , right on the money
Yea what sorta POS needs a 400 ??? I strongly suggest you toss that out and while you are at it, get yourself a real Operating system ... somehting that ends in 'nix'

Are you sure it's not the processor speed and the Windows version that the program needs? XP has compatibility mode for Windows 98,95, etc. Since you haven't listed what program you're trying to use, this is just a guess. Hope it helps!

Yep, That's what I'm thinking too ... Might be worth taking a look at VirtualBOX or VirtualPC... Both are free and easy to use and will allow you to run windows95/98 at native speed; assuming you have a copy of windows98 kicking around.

Also not sure if you can specify a certain processor speed to emulate - I don't remember being presented with those options in either application, but that doesn't mean it's not hidden somewhere.

its a dos based program used to calibrate pressure sensors in computers. it just gets a runtime error if you use it on any thing faster than 400mhz

Sometimes, esp in the case of medical applications, upgrading the software is not possible. In that case when the computer system that you are using dies and is replaced, it often times comes with an OS/hardware that is not compatible with the old software. In this case you have two options find an old crusty computer somewhere that works or an emulator that will get the job done on a modern OS/hardware.
Run everything on *nix.... Problem solved.
