Have you changed the jetting at all on the bike? Is it the stock (euro spec) 125 main and 40 pilots and no washers? Have you tried playing with the mixture screws?
First the simple thing. Make sure you didn't knacker the fuel lines when you pulled the tank the get the filter in there. Failing that, check the jetting and such.
Yeah you need to change the jetting if you are going from open carbs to airbox. K&N or other pod filters will be close to what you have now, you might even be able to leave it alone.
Without opening up the carbs and seeing what the PO actually did, its hard to suggest ways to change it.
Yes fuel economy goes way down when you open up the bike's breathing and jet properly for it. Lita's bike went from 190 -200 miles per tank down to around 150-160. Its the price for more power.
WOW, just found this post by accident. My bike does this same thing. EXACTLY THE SAME. I took the filter out to test it, and sure enough, it runs awesome without it. I put the filter in and it chokes at high rpms. I thought it was just clogged. Im gonna get either k&n drop in or pod filters.. ill keep everyone posted on whethere that makes a difference or not. Have you remedied this problem yet?
I have 40 pilots, one washer on needles.. and 125.7 mains. im upping the mains soon :thumb:
I am no expert ... just adding ideas. Could the problem be your float level? (I'm asking).
;)
Actually, i forgot to mention this, the problem is most likely that one of the slide holes needs blocked off..im doing that as well most likely.
OK We're doing random things to these aren't we...
Rashad...Yes check you floats, but 127.5 is too rich to use a UNI or paper stock filter and stock pipe (or slip on) The K&N in the airbox will work fine. If you want to use UNI or stock paper drop to 125...Again check floats and see if your needle is raised up too high...No more than 2, 1/2 mm thick shims in each...I would try 1 each then go to 2.
Now the other european Bike...40, 125 is your stock setting...so You should be fine with that. That's what we use here. Make sure there is no hoses missing in the airbox etc.
Cool.
Srinath.

yes, but i also have a V&H pipe! I pulled the plugs on her with no filter and the plugs were BRIGHT BURNT WHITE! :x not good! I think it was detonating.. because i heard some odd noises that prompted me to check the plugs in the first place. what i have is defnitely too lean... at least for no filter with airbox.
Aren't white plugs from burning oil?
Would this also cause a lean condition? Anybody?
:P

OK with a V&H 127.5 isn't too far off...also check for hoses from your airbox being ripped/missing. White plugs are lean, but you are only testing idle when you pull it after idling...To test it at high rpm...rev it to the rpm range you want under load...in 6th and hold steady rpm/throttle position for 5 seconds and hit the kill switch, pull in clutch and get off the road and then check the plugs. Check your float level as well. They should be right at the top of the bowl and no more in both carbs. Sorry I was telling 2 guys and got a little garbled. But check for missing hoses in airbox and check floats before doing anyhting. To richen the bottom...turn air screw 1/2 a turn out... do that also in steps, 1/2 first, and add 1/2 when you think its lean. If the plugs are white...well give it 1 turn to start with. You sure you floats are right...That carb set I didn't check anything...I put it together from 3 sets of carbs...so please check evreything...and I presume you celened the thing too...cos I did not.
Cool.

LOL.. cleaned? ummm.. yeah most parts
ANyhow, i KNOW its not lean at idle. i have the plugs removed, 40 pilots and its almost at 4 turns out!! no way its lean at idle.. probly rich. I rode the bike up my street at about 4-5k then shut it off and checked. Bright burnt white. i am NOT running a filter.. so thats part of it. Im ordering a K&N clamp on and ill probly block off a hole in the slide (to cure the bogging problem) and hopefully this will cure the disease. But just for the record srinath, there is absolutely NO (zero, zilch, nada) BOGGING when the filter is removed. It runs beautifully. So its worth looking into for others that have been showing the same symptoms..
Thanks bud :thumb:
P.S ill check that float level
Filter makes it misbehave...no filter = good...you have to be rich...unless your filter is so clogged up that it turns a lean bike so far over to the rich side you now are thinking its rich...I'd clean/get a new filter and go from there. If your old filter is paper please send it to me instead of throwing it.
Thanks.
Srinath.

Srinath.. consider the filter yours.. btw, yes i think its choking my well breathing bike on the intake side... but then i remove the filter and its such a drastic change.. that is why. Its very clogged. BTW, do you have any cool parts laying around? progressive springs, fork seals, brakes..etc..

I've tried a brand spanking new filter with mine so I'm pretty sure the filter isn't clogged...
Basically just want to get an idea if running without an air filter (which seems absolutely fine in terms of performance, bog free etc) is likely do to anything more than use more petrol..?
Cheers,
Adam
P.S. Rashad - did your bike sound mucho smoother with the filter?
I want to avoid removing the carbs if I can but how o you check float level etc..?
thanx

Got to be running rich. What Srinath said.

U tube method...Fit a clear plastic U tube (should be tight) on the carb drain spout and open the drain screw. Then put it in prime. Mark off where the fuel stabilizes, repeat for other carb...should be right at the top of the bowl and no more. 1 mm in float level is ~1/2 a jet size everywhere. So if you are 2 mm high and have 40 pilots...its like using 42.5 pilots. Its very significant...cos with 42.5 the bike runs like crap.
Cool.

OK Time to call the big guns...Kerry please help this kid out...

Where have you been, John? :?
Go to my home page (link below) and then click the Float Height Check (http://www.bbburma.net/FloatHeight.htm) link.
I really do intend to shoot some better pictures, but you'll just have to wait. :nono:
