Ok so when I hit throttle even a slight bit hard the RPM's drop and then it takes a while for it to catch up. sometimes they jump up fast and sometimes its like the bike is struggling to rev. If anyone has a clue please let me know. It is a 93 with about 6800 miles on it.
Hmmm. There is more than one possibility here.
First, is the tank full? This behavior sounds like what happens when you're riding down the road and you're about to run out of gas (or you need to switch to REServe). If the tank has some fuel but isn't full, try switching to the REServe or PRIme positions and see if the behavior continues.
Second, since the bike is new to you, how much do you about the state of its "innards"? Any reason to suspect that the carburetors have been modified with different jets, or that the mixture screws have been tampered with? Is the air filter clean? (Try running the bike -- temporarily -- without it.)
my car used to do that when the clutch was going bad. It slipped and it had the same sympdoms, i had to replace the disc and it fixed it i dunno how it works with a bike tho so i dunno just thought id throw my 2 cents in
Thanks. It has a full tank of gas. The tank of gas that was in it before was about 6 months old and I ran that out of it. I put in some gas treatment and high octain fuel and it runs much better but the lag is still there. Mayby carbs or air filter...not sure how to mess with either one of those or even where it is and how to get to it. Any more input is great!!!
like i said perviously im new to motorcycles but not to cars. When i wanted to give y carb a good cleaning i used some store bought spray carb cleaner. Sprayed into the carb, about a 2 sec spray every 20 secs. Then started it up and did it while running. Though it might not be good for a bike. Gah how useless am i hahaha
did it do anything to your carb when you did that? good or bad?
I posted this photo in another thread recently. It shows where your air filter is. (It's the round hole. ;))
To remove the air filter you have to undo the four screws that mount it to the airbox.
To get access to all four of the air filter mounting screws you need to slide the fuel tank rearwards about 2 inches and then lift the back of the tank (now that it has 30 lbs of fuel in it ). It helps to put a short length of 2x4 across the frame, under the tank ... so you don't have to hold it up yourself.
To slide / lift the tank you need to undo the two bolts at the rear of the tank.
To undo the two bolts you have to remove the plastic side panels ... or at least loosen them up so they will drop down in the front and expose the two fuel tank mounting bolts.
To "loosen" the side panels you have to:
* remove the seat
* remove two bolts on either side of the seat lock (it will make sense when you see them)
* pull the panels outward about an inch ... at each of the three mounting points where they
are held in place by rubber grommets
You can watch me do all of this in the first couple minutes of [my Valve Adjustment video (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2015554469142545363)].
Keep track of the bolts and screws and clips you remove!
yea it helped my car out alot ran better, when i went to rebuild it. It looked very clean on the inside, i cant think of the name of the brand i got tho.
Thanks Kerry.
whats is the purpose of a valve adjustment?
What are you trying to do - learn everything at once? (Kudos! But don't worry if you don't understand everything at once. It certainly took ME a while to figure a lot of things out.... :icon_rolleyes:)
In simple terms, you adjust the valves so they will open and close at the intended times during the 4-cycle (intake / compression / combustion / exhaust) process.
For LOTS more detail, see [THIS OLD POST (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=13483.msg118214#msg118214)].
That Kerry valve adjustment video is pure gold. We need him to make more videos so we dont have to all watch Britney spears BS anymore.
However if you dont want pure gold, and want some clear as a mud slurpee style garbled instructions ... yes come over to my house and I'll crack open a GR motor and show you some irrelevant crap ... :thumb:
Cool.
Srinath.
If I knew I could learn it all at once i damn sure would...haha. I just like to know what I am doing when I need to or want to do something. I have always had an intrest in bikes but its hard to learn unless you have something to look at. You sir are a big help already.
Hey Srinath that would help out too.
So we get a choice between watching Kerry or Britney?
I know how to adjust valves, but I've forgotten what to do with the other choice.
;)

Wow - that must be Srinath talk for "Srinath talk".
Thanks for the kind words.
Say ... what exactly does a GR engine come off of? (http://bbburma.net/Smilies/headscratch.gif)
haha
A GR motor is a GS with 1/2 inch added to the stroke and a 3mm over bore.
From the valve cover and valves this noob wont know the difference.
Thrash - I am off 529 near 6. Saturday or sunday are days to be spent slaving on some stupid ass honda ... so we should do then. maybe You can help me yank the GS off the van/trailer ... or OK not just yet, I should get the Yam and honda done, then GS.
Cool.
Srinath.
GR650, it's a real tempter:

sounds good not ready to take my bike that far yet and i am waiting to hear back about the lost title...so i could bring the car..haha
