Title: black rubber trim around bottom of tank is coming off. how to stick it back on?
Post by: mattress on January 30, 2008, 01:33:46 PM
I have a 99 GS500.  The rubber gasket/trim that wraps around the perimeter of the tank, on the bottom edge of the tank between it and the frame, is coming off.  I can't get it to stay on.

What do you guys suggest to get it to stick back on?  I was thinking about some spray on silicon adhesive or something.

thanks in advance

I did my best to explain as detailed as possible LOL

I guess a picture is worth a thousand words, right?

If you find a good solution, let us know!  My '99 is starting to look like yours; clear coat coming off the letters on the tank, etc.  It's probably just a matter of time before my trim starts coming off too.

Suzuki already solved the problem, my 97 had that trim but my 02 doesn't.  Think they dropped it starting with new tank for 01 on.  Doesn't do anything, just trim.  Throwing it away would be my resolution to the problem.

I had this abnoxious tank rattle at lower RPMs.  I went to the hardware store and got some black silicon sealant/adhesive.

This was a pain in the butt.  Messy... and takes a lot of patience, but finally got it to stick back on there.  Took her for a test drive around the block, and the rattle is gone :)

I feel special, Kerry posted in my thread!  :D

I used some contact cement to stick mine back on, seems to work ok.

I've wondered if it was aesthetic or mechanical. Since mines' black, I figured it was supposed to suppress vibration somehow. I get buzzes at 6-7K rpm when the tank is full, but no other time (FROM THE TANK PEOPLE !) - all the other normal buzzes, rattles, and wiggles are there ;)

Good news for all your killers out there. I replaced the rubber trim about a year ago and it still looks good.

1) Order the OEM rubber trim from BikeBandit.com

2) Stick it on using

Mine falls off every time I remove the tank. I think it's pretty normal. Yea, Krazy glue would help  but I have enough patience to just put it back together again.

Crazy glue or automotive weather strip cement, do they still make that stuff???   :dunno_white:  Mines off in one corner too.

That is the first thing I take off of a tank. Nice place for water to collect if not secured completely.

Ok, I'm going a different direction.  I, too, have a yello '99, and when that strip started coming off of mine, I went to autozone and bought black door edge guard.  It's self-adhesive, and it looks as good as / better than stock.   :thumb:

Thanks GS Jack.  I was wondering why mine (2001) did not have the aforementioned trim.
