So I have 5000 miles on my 04 GS. The oil was changed at about 3000 miles, and I think it is time to change it again. Is it okay to simply drain and fill since Ill do a complete tune up with filter and spark plugs etc in 2000 miles? Just wondering what if any effect it will have on the bike. Thanks
I would think it would be fine. Does'nt sound like you are running too hard with only 5000 miles on the '04. Of all the stuff I seemed to have mastered oil changes are the most enjoyable, because I have broken anything doing that. Since you are not going to change the filter, you might want to use good MC oil to get you the extra 2000 miles :thumb:
I change oil every 2000-2500 miles and the filter every other oil change. Have done it that way for over 50k miles on my 02 GS. I use 15W-40 Delvac or Rotella dino juice.
I put 15W-50 Mobil 1 synthetic in my 97 GS and changed oil and filter every 3k miles up to about 50k miles and then used Delvac for another 30k miles changing filter every other time as I do now on the 02.
Oil consumption went about the same on both bikes. By 50k miles they would need a pint added about 1500 miles after change and then another pint every 500 miles after that. Bought a gallon of the Delvac truck oil per oil change and put in 3 qts for change and had 2 pints left for adding.
Neither bike required adding between 2-3k mile changes when new.
just a pit o info, i have found that when my bike needs a top op of oil it usually tells me by sticking a bit in neutral.
