Post by: drowningbird808 on February 03, 2008, 01:04:24 PM
im impressed with my little gs..130..my buddy was on a zx6 next to me and his speedo read 132..it wasnt downhill or a 1 mile straight a way..it hit it fast..this is weird becuse i could never get it past 124 before..

Congrats on 130...I have only made it to 85 but I just started riding.

Many things are possible with a ZX6 towbike.

Indicated speed is not the same as actual speed... I would guess that you toped out at less than 115 as the GS has a documented top speed of about 110  :thumb:

I'd be taking that with a pinch of salt   next time take a GPS with you  :thumb:

an indicated 135km/h (I know you are taking miles an hour!) on my bike (07 GS500F) gives a reading of 120km/h on the GPS..... a mates bandit has a similar though not quite so bad difference in true speed and indicated speed...

I was tailing an F430 spyder the other day and we compared notes afterwards.  His speedo was telling him 131 while mine was registering a little under 140.  I'm going to hope that his is the more accurate of the two given the price.

I weigh 160 and my bike tops the speedo at 130. Up to 110 I know the speedo is right bacause thats what the dragstrip clock says too. On a good day with no wind and a good draft from anouther bike and it is possible. My 98 will do it when im in a pack.hahahaha

No offens, but the GS just doesn't produce the kind of power needed to hit 130.  While technically the gearbox is capable of it, if I hooked a weedeater engine up to my GSXR's transmission it wouldn't hit 130.....hell it wouldn't hit 30.

Top speed is only really limited by horsepower and drag. If you weighed 220 pounds - and everything else was the same ( your size/shape, power  of the bike..drag coefficient , gearing etc etc) - you would reach the same top speed- you would just take a little bit longer to get there.

The average  Gs  might get you to 115-118 mph on a good day....at 7-10%  error ( as you go faster the error gets bigger..) that would put you to close to an indicated 125-130.

I've been over 180+ mph Indicated..( realistically it was maybe 170 mph ) on My ZX11 years ago. It was dumb...but I had to know.

I def. hit 130 when i first got my GS - I think it had more in it to be honest...hugging the gas tank it made it there relatively quickly for a small bike. 15T sprocket

On the downside:  I don't think 120 over a bridge, on a windy day is quite as nerve-wracking for them.

I won't tell you that the stealths speedo was 20 over... I'm going to tell you that you didn't go 180-anything in a stealth.  A stealth simply doesn't have the gearing to do that and even if it did, you don't have the room to go 186 unless you were in some sort of salt flats or something.  I don't car if there was a 800 HP VR4 TT motor in it, it's NOT realistic.  Don't get all pissy and defensive... it just didn't happen.  I was more inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt on the 130 thing before you said you were 186 in a dodge stealth!

BTW, a Dodge Stealths top speed is gear limited at about 160mph and the 1/4 mile is only 14.2 seconds... not terribly impressive for a TT, 296bhp "supercar"

You guys are crazy...I know you think 110 is the top speed, but you're wrong. I swear to you all, right here that I will show you 120 in 5th @ ~10,800RPM and acceleration in 6th to ~130 before I get scared and accel. is too slow to be fun - if the speedo's off at that speed, it isn't that much. I tested it's limits again today as I'm likely upgrading to a gsx-r6 later today and felt like running the piss out of it first. 1993 GS, 32k miles,  0-120 took ~35sec,  I weigh only 145lb, 60 degree temp outside, low humidity, 15t front sprocket, carbs clean and synced, and hugging the tank like it was my dying relative. No other work done to the bike. I swear to you I've hit >100 EVERY TIME I get on the freeway, and that's usually in 4th before I throw it in 6th and let off the throttle - it cruises it's best at ~90-95mph.

If you weigh 180, have an open face helmet and don't tune your motor then yeah, maybe 130 is off limits...

There is no 110 top speed...

I've seen that too, but I'm thinking limiter on the newer ones or something? I know what 110 feels like on a bike - I've riden for 25 years now, and I can breeze past it on my GS if I tuck in tight behind my head...

Mine... when the speedo says 80, I'm actually going about 72.  I know that because when I got pulled over for doing 72 my speedo said 80.  10% reduction is normal for most bikes.  TEN PERCENT of 130 is 13mph, you were doing 115-ish!

I know for a fact the speedo on my 05 F was off. Had the cycle computer on as well as the stock. The cycle computer was always reading slower than the stock speedo. My GS was stock performance wise, except for a stock gsxr exhaust can. Can't say that I have ever gone much over 100 indicated and that was before the cycle computer was put on so I don't know how far off it would have been at that rate but i'm sure it would have been off at least what it was between 5 and 90 mph.

yeah - they're soft compound - 400miles on the interstate last weekend destroyed a perfectly good set - can still see indicators though so I felt ok riding today. I actually have new ones sitting in my kitchen but I'm probably trading my 2 GS's for a '99 gsx-r this evening so i didn't bother...

You're right with most bikes...

Doing the math it actually works out to be a little off for me...but not too much

@ 10800RPM in 5th assuming my tach is close to accurate and adjusting for my 15t sprocket - I would have been going ~115; about 4-5mph under what my speedo read(going that fast I'm sure I was off my a couple mph.
Assuming the same mathematical margin, when I hit 10,000 RPM in 6th(about where it stopped going any faster - I DID get to actually watch the speedo) I would have been doing ~128 actual. That's assuming my tach is pretty spot on.

Here's the math if you're wondering =

--Stock gearing--

top speed 5th gear @11,000RPM 124MPH
top speed 6th gear @11,000RPM 140MPH

add 6.6667% to MAX RPM for 15t sprocket (15/16) = 11733.73

124/11733.37 = x/10800; x=~114.5

140/11733.37 = x/10000; x=~128

I don't disagree with your math... I just have a hard time believing the 140 part.  I've had mine, stripped down, faired, larger rear tire, stock rear tire, 15t sprocket and haven't seen more than 130.  I always assumed if I could but I'd never had that kind of space to do it.  The power on a GS falls off like crazy after around 9-9.5 grand anyhow, thus making your 10,000 in 6th part tough for me to swallow.  The tiny bit of power you're producing at that point would take a lifetime to climb much higher in 6th gear.

the 140 is theoretical with stock gearing (23/27; 0.851:1)

I know it can't hit 11,000 RPM in 6th

You're right about the climb from 9-10k RPM too...it took forever. Savannah HWY in Alabama is slightly "rolling" hills too so I'm certain it helps a little. My major point is that with a small rider(I'm 145lb, 5'8", full face helmet) 110 is actually really easy to cross...I guess my ~35sec is actually 0-~114.5 though, not 0-~120

I'm willing to bet that the test riders that put the GS500 at 108-113mph top speed probably did it on a track and weigh considerably more than myself

well im 5'-7" and wiegh 115lbs. with -1 in the front, i pass one of those digital speed signs everyday on my way to work, i kept my speedo at 50, and every time the digital said i was doing 45mph  which is roughly 10% off, so if you think about it 130 on the speedo means  i would actually be doing about 113mph. personally i find it hard to believe it would be possible to hit 130 on the gs, and if you did, that would be one really long stretch of highway

So I'm cruising at 87 mph today, in a 35. My carbs are gunked, my valves clackin, my chain is loose. The wind shifted and I hit 88.8 mph and the flux capacitor engaged, next thing I new I was trading in my "Vintage Suzuki Internal Combustion Engined Motorcycle" for a new Toyota Hybrid cold fusion Star Cruiser. You know, with all the chrome. And the teleporter option for the pillion. Guess the dealer was so excited to have 3.5 gallons of the last vintage gasoline in the universe or something.

I realized I left a cake in the oven, had to turn around, and shaZam!, here I am.

But man, there for a nano second I DID HIT 130 ON MY GS DAMMIT !

The law here in the UK states vehicle speedos must not under-read, but can over-read by up to 10% max, assuming the same applies in the US. 130 -10% (13) = 117mph. On a long flat straight road, with a light rider, a bit of tailwind and some needle bounce you might see an indicated 130, but I cant see it actually doing a genuine 130......personaly I wouldnt want to do that sort of speed on a stock GS5.

I'm 5'7" and I maybe weigh 145 with ALL my gear and I've never seen more than a 125-ish indicated and I've got some pretty good stretches of flat smooth road to roll down.  I s'pose if you could get it to around 110-120 and then got a little downhill roll it could be possible... however, I'm still skeptical until I see something of the sort.

Even in my V-Strom forums, it's been said over and over that Suzuki speedos are off. The DL1000 is averaged about 11-12% off. I think the 650 was 8-10%. My speedo is right-on at 55, but at 70 I was reading 77. Still, you were hauling some serious ass!

Not a fat chance you where doing 130 on a stock bike. I turn into Turn 1 at Brainerd with 9.5K on the tach which is about 120MPH(stock gearing). The straight on Brainard is about a mile long, and I come onto the straight about 70-80MPH and it takes the entire length of the straight to get to 120MPH. Rider weight is not actually that big of a factor, but actually there is a massive amount of wind resistance at that speed. In fact once I got out of a tuck and sat up, I almost got ripped from the handlebars at that speed.

OK, the Bonneville Salt Flats aren't THAT close, but they're not that far, either.  The official venue is about 2.5 hours from my place, but the flats go on and on, making for a fairly monotonous hour of I-80 riding.  (Not that I mind too much ... unless there's a headwind. :icon_confused:)

Easy.  Rip the engine out and drop in a 650r engine that's been tuned well.
