Ive got a sick GS. After disassembling the top end, I found the "B" valve-cam cap broken in half. Ive included the diagram and colored the part green.

I tried to look up the part number and order a new one, but it does not exist. After calling Suzuki from the local dealer, It looks like I have to buy the entire top end to get these caps.
I was hoping that someone has a parts bike and would be willing to sell me this part.
Thanks so much everyone!
You can not buy these individually as they are bolted to the head, then line bored so the head and cam caps match perfectly. You therefore have to find a cam cap with the same dimensions as yours(unlikely).
You typically need to purchase a new head, but you could always give it a shot, worst comes to worst you toast the cams and heads, so you just have to buy them anyways.
Good Luck
well, that certainly explains why Suzuki didn't wanna sell me one. I appreciate your advice, its very helpful. The dealer quoted me $750 ish for a new head, do you have any idea what a used one normally goes for? I'm a broke college student, and can't really afford to get a new one.
Thanks!
FoF
I'd sell you a great head for $100. Just opened and cleaned, nothing else was needed.
Oh crap, forget it, you should get cam shafts with it, I dont ahve them. The perfect way to swap it will be to use your old cam sprokets and your old cam chain bolted onto the cam shafts which need to be from that head.
Cool.
Srinath.
Cool.
From the way it seems, I will need to buy the head, cams, and caps all together, so that they fit nicely. I appreciate the offer, its a shame you don't have the cams too.
If anyone else has an old head unit they can split with, I'd love to get my bike running again.
Thanks again!
FoF
The cams are not matched to the cylinder head bearings on the GS500. The cams are sold separately. Therefore, assuming your cams are OK, all you need is the basic head with good cam caps.
I have a head off a early model and one off a newer model. They valves are no good on either of them. The cams are there and the caps are there too. Not sure if they will help you any, but they are free to you plus shipping. PM me if you want them.
Alex

Well if this is what he's going to do, I think he can just swap off for example the 'A' tower for another 'A' tower. Its just about the same as swapping his head minus cam shafts for another head. The point is that the cam bearings and cam shafts wear together, you swap out stuff and you could gall up another one that has different wear pattern. I guess if you do swap anything and dont have the items that are worn togther as a pair, you just have to do a 3-400 mile break in type thing. Maybe ??
Cool.
Srinath.
No.
If the camshaft journals are in good condition you can swap the cams between any other head so long as those journal bearings are in good condition. If the journals on either are worn to the point of causing a swap problem you'll likely have problems in short order regardless.
Journal bearings should not wear under normal circumstances, as they are hydrodynamically lubricated. Where the problem lies is the oil pump circulating clearance sized contaminants which set up a sanding action between the bearing and the journal. This sould not be a significant problem in a low-time road motorcycle engine that has seen regular maintenance and oil changes.
Wow!
Thanks for all of the responses everyone, I really appreciate the advice. I'm going to take Alex up on his VERY kind offer, and swap the whole head unit, trying to use my old cams and valves.
I love this site, everyone is so helpful.
Thanks again =D

Completely off topic - sorta ...
Can you turn the cam shaft bearing end down and maybe machine the head a bit and put a roller bearing in there ... Actually I wish they had done that with the savage ... and better yet, they should have put rubber slippers on the outside of the cylinder wall to keep the cam chain from sawing through that ... cos it will, and rather rapidly I might add.
Cool.
Srinath.
I'm having the same problem that FOF did... cracked cam caps. Anyone have suggestions? Leads on a head?
PS anyone ever tried welding those cam caps back up? Mine are only partially cracked... I don't think they're aluminum, they're just pot metal right?
