Title: What I plan on doing with my GS and if it will work or not.
Post by: T-Bone on February 13, 2008, 08:58:59 PM
I have an 06 GS 500F and I would like to make it look kind of like an E.  Is it hard to do?  What I am thinking of doing is using more of a square headlight, not a round one.  To make it match the break light a bit more.  I was also thinking about taking the oil cooler off the engine and mount it to the forks under the head light.  I have seen it done before on another bike and it gave it a really nice look.

Converting an F to an E is really easy.  You can search these forums and the wiki for information - although, lets face it its mostly a case of unbolting things, so you can feel your own way to a large extent (I did).

The things that you will need to track down are the headlight brackets that fit the fork tubes.  You can buy aftermarket ones or visit a wreckers yard (my preference) to get the real deal for peanuts.  Then you can mount pretty much any headlight that affixes through bolts in the sides - although you may need to tweak/make new triangular 'cheek-pieces' if you choose a headlight that is vastly different from stock.  My dominator-style twin headlights required this due to their depth, and again this was a walk in the park to do.

Lastly, dont forget to post up a pic - so we can all marvel in your handiwork!  O0

I found a 98 GSX 750 headlight that I might think about using.  It is almost flat on the bottom with a small point on both sides of the top.  I think it would look really cool on the front.  I also found an oil cooler from a BMW motorcycle that might work out for the front.  It even has a rock guard on it too.  Where can some I find the fork mounts to attach the headlight to?  I looked on ebay and I couldnt find any.

I would ring around your local motorcycle wreckers yards and tell them that you want the headlight brackets for a GS500E.

Mine cost AU$20 with all the rubber grommets, screws and the cheek-pieces.  They needed a bit of a straightening out with some pliers, a scrub with a scotch-pad and a new coat of rattle-can black.  Now they look like they came new from the factory.

And as a word of warning, be wary of cheap, generic aftermarket brackets - there have been many reports of people having problems of weak metal and flakey chrome.  The good thing about buying wrecked stock ones is that a) they're cheap, b) they look well integrated and, well... stock.  :icon_rolleyes: :icon_mrgreen:
