Title: Out of mothballs
Post by: BladeRunner on February 17, 2008, 08:31:06 PM
I am getting ready to purchase my first bike. A 1999 GS500E that was originaly bought new by my neice. It only has 1300 miles on it and most of that was put on in the first couple of years of her ownership. It has been stored inside but I wonder what sort of initial service I, or the shop, should do?
Oh, by the way, $1800 aint bad right?

Change the oil, check the tires for cracks and dry rot, depending on how it was put away be prepared to clean the carbs, check the air filter.

1800 aint bad for a bike with 1300 miles.  I got mine with 7100 miles for 1200 (a 2001) but had to put maybe 400 in on parts.  (gas tank lock was stuck, new battery, tires...)

Sounds like a good deal for that bike (i.e. stored indoors and you personally know the original owner).

When I bought it, my bike had been parked indoors for a couple of years. The only part that needed replacement was the battery. Otherwise, I drained the gasoline, cleaned the carbs, changed the oil, cleaned/lubed the chain... and rode all summer.

I've since replaced tires as well. Mine were the original tires from 1995 (the bike only had 3000 miles on it). They had plenty of tread, but I wasn't comfortable with their age.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I had to change the plugs too!   ;)
