Title: UPDATE on my GS500 let me down. . But I let my GS let me down. . . .
Post by: ejudasf on February 23, 2008, 08:34:50 PM
I got to hand it to this board.  Everyone that has input, can and will help out anyone with questions or comments.

Some comments are very funny.

ANYWAY!, recently, my GS sputtered, and I commented on having to re-do my carbs and stuff.  Just for the record, my carbs were fine.  Very little brown stuff (rust) was in the bowls.  I mean very little.

I put the 'blue lube' 2-cycle engine oil on all the parts as I put them back.

MY PROBLEM WAS THAT I WAS OUT OF GAS!

I didn't know.   I thought I was good on the gas part.

On another note, I also did the aquarium rocks stuff.  rust in the tank,  It was the biggest P-I-T-A (pain in the arse) I have ever done.  Well worth it, so far.

I started with very little fuel in my tank.  That is why my bike sputtered.  But when I put the 5-lb bag of little white rocks in my tank, I didn't know it was going to take such a long time to take all the little white rocks out.  They were no longer white.  They were now brown.  The 'gravy' that came out was so thick, it left a cake on effect in the pan I was using.

I tried to take out every single rock, but I know I have left at least 3 pebbles in the tank.  I also used a few ounces of fuel to see what color the fuel that comes out was, and it came out clear enough after about 5 attempts of getting clear fuel.

After putting everything back together, the bike started fine.  rode it around the block fine.

Wont know if everything is perfect till tomorrow.  Will take it to work. I work on Sunday.  <sigh>

Laterz and thanks again for the encouragment to fix my own bike.

what is this aquarium rock trick?

My bike was sitting in a garage since 2001.  I got it at the beginning of this year.

The tank had rust in it.  I thought just sloshing around gasoline in it would do the trick.  WRONG!

I added a fuel filter and it always had rust sediment in it.

Someone said to put aquarium rocks, in the tank and shake it up.

I also put a little more gas to help carry away the rust particles.

Mind you, it took a lot longer than you might imagine to take all the rocks out.

The inside of the tank looks a heluva lot cleaner.  I came to work on my ride today, and it rode awesome.  I can't wait for the ride home.

Good to know that with all that rust in the tank the carbs are still ok!  :thumb:

Happens all the time around here!  :icon_mrgreen:  An "empty" tank on the GS really doesn't "look" so empty.  :dunno_white:

Did it run on either the PRI (prime) or RES (reserve) petcock setting? I don't see how it could immediately not run on any setting unless you were running on PRI or RES the whole time. Are your fuel hoses on backwards maybe?

I bypassed the PRI/RES petcock.

Got a T connection and went to town in that.

I actually had fun again.  No sputtering or anything.  The bike ran good.  I even hit 100 and there was still more to go, but I don't want a ticket either.  Maybey I'll get it up a little faster.  I hope.

I think I should be good to go for now.  Will be getting NEW tires, Brakes, and fork seals for MY piece of mind.

laters guys.
