okay, I know there are a hundred posts on this, but help me without having to read all of them.
I have an 89' that I put a K&N Lunchbox on. Rejetted with 140 mains. Screws 3 turns out.
1) I have to turn the idle screw way in to keep it started.
2) when riding it has little power and bogs down when gas applied
3) runs better when choke is applied with gas (almost like it evens out the mix).
Seems like I'm getting too much gas, not enough air. There is a gas smell in the exhaust and around the bike. If I turn down the idle screw it doesn't change the idle until I get to the end, then it just dies. If I turn the idle screw up to keep it going, it idles extremely rough and smells of gas.
So......
1) which way to I turn the screws?
2) are the jets too big?
3) where do I kick it to make it work right.
Thanks for any direction/advice.
gracias
Oh, and how bout this. The pilot jets don't have to change but I bought new ones anyway to make a clean change. The po stripped the head of the jets so I can't get them out. Can they be drilled? Am I screwed (no pun intended)?

you didn't mention which pipe you were running - ?
as far as stripped heads on brass, if you find a LEFT hand drill, you can very carefully drill the pilot out. most likely the drill will catch (it's brass after all, brass grabs drills) and pull out the jet. since it's in a counter bore, you can use a drill bushing (just a round piece with a hole the right size for your LEFT hand drill bit) to make sure you don't scar the counter bore. i don't know the exact size of the threads for that jet, or i'd tell ya the tap size drill (left hand) you want. :) steady hands and patience are a must for this.
Sorry, pipe is stock.
I'll look into the left hand drill bit. Basically this is just to catch the brass and pull it out, like an extractor right? These still thread clockwise like the mains, correct?
turn your fuel mixture screws in 1 turn. That will make it less rich. I had the same problem. Everyone said 3.5 turns out for your screws. Once I went to 2.5 it was perfect.
So puts yours at 2 turns out.
Okay, 2 great updates.
1. Found a screw extractor kit at tractor supply company. Came with 4 bits (left turning bits) and the smallest one took out both pilot jets carefully within 5 minutes. Slow speed on drill, take your time, pray. All worked fine.
2. Cleaned the carb, installed new pilot jets, put screws 1.5 turns out (didn't read Tusseys post yet), and the bike will start and idle much better with full choke. With no choke, it stalls immediately. So, I'll try adding a turn and that should prob take care of it.
Thanks for the advice.
2.5 turns works well. I think it's .5 turn either way.
Is it reasonable to expect going from 127.5 mains to 140 mains, and adding the lunchbox, would bring into play starvation issues? I've never had problems before, but now unless I'm running on prime, the bike stutters like it is starved. Also, if I run on reg/reserve and ride hard, it will just stall when I let off the gas, like its used up all the gas and can get no more. Is running on prime the only solution (other than pringle and/or petcock mod)?
