I'm looking at one that's off a pre - 600, which I believe is before 1998. Not sure of the exact year, It's either an '89 or a '91 so I should be fine . I'll have to ask the seller.

Check out katriders.com That's where I found mine. One guy wanted $50 plus shipping, He was like "Bikebandit has the shock for $488..." and I'm like no thanks. So I found another guy on there who sold me his for $25 shipped.
I have a 95 Kat 750 shock.Paid $15 includes shipping.Shock was like new when I recieved it.Pablo's site is great but don't leave out the famous Wiki. http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Upgrades/RearShock

Was that a bolt on affair?
Yes.No mods to the shock or bike was done. That's why I chose the Kat shock.Mine was about 1/4 inch longer than the GS shock which gave it a little lift in the back, but it's not a problem.
the sv needs modification the kat you just have to adjust before you put it on the bike.
i counted 13 at my local bike salavge yard the other day while hunting for a 4.5 rear wheel? they should be pretty cheap? if anyone want one i can get some prices?

Whats the location of said salvage yard?I can't find a mc yard close to me.The last one I found burnt and they just scraped every thing during clean up.Never reopened.
bobs used motorcycles- 1325 e. elwood phoenix, AZ 85040 602-4373148 I'm down there like 3 times a week, they have lots of gs 500's like 10 or 11 parts bikes, and alot of katana's, bandits & gsxf's too. This place has lots of salvage title makes/models and thousands of parts bikes its like a friggin grown mans treasure hunt, most times their cheaper than ebay too.
Thanks for posting the info.
That makes me sad. That yard is almost 2000 miles away.Shipping would kill the good prices.
That sucks, im about 4 miles away.(im there way too much) My buddies from work always send me with a shopping/search list as well as im always getting inventory for the guys looking for bikes. You can get 04 05 gsxr 600's & 750's for like $2600-$3000 laid down but repairable
