I am preparing to replace my chain, and noticed that the chain guide is cracked. The chain has been rubbing the swing arm,so I have a replacement swing arm from my project bike.My question is,is there any cheap replacements or substitutes?I will be traveling on my bike this summer and would like to replace it with new part.Is there anything I could do to prevent this problem from happening again?I keep a check on my chain tightness and clean/lube my chain about once a week. The PO did no chain maintainence. Thanks in advance and BTW I used the search function.I'm just not sure what terms to search on this topic other than chain, guide, and chain guide. :dunno_white:
EDIT: Has any one used a spring loaded roller tensioner on the GS?If so,how does it hold up?
It would be great if you could post a photo! That would help the rest of us know what to look out for. :thumb:
What pics should I post? The ones of the plastic chain guide? If you follow the chain up the swing arm to the engine you'll see the plastic bit that I'm refering to.It keeps the chain from hitting the swing arm and damaging the swing arm or chain. As far as a roller guide, dirt bikes and atv's use them and I don't have a pic of that.
Sorry, I meant that a picture of the damaged swingarm might be informational.
The swing arm it's self is just scratched a little. The plastic guide is what cracked. It's still on my bike in storage.I know when I got the bike the chain was real loose.I could roll on the throttle, then the chain would tighten and give a little jerk as it put power to the rear wheel.I promptly serviced the chain and have maintained it ever since. The reason I'm replacing the chain is, the rubber O rings have dried out and causing the chain to be stiff.I think that's what has been killing my mpg.
I see :)
You mentioned that you were replacing the swingarm, so I thought the damage would be much more extensive.
Thanks for clarifiying :thumb:
