Hi everyone. I own a 1996 GS500E. I bought it from a friend of mine and have been working on getting it running again. I spent the day putting the carbs and air box back on the bike and have two questions.
1) I read on the forum here that you should expect a small click from the carb when you release the throttle from 1/4 turn and it goes back to its starting position. I hear a very faint click as it returns to zero, but I hear a much louder click when I turn the throttle in the first place. From a resting postion, to that first movement of the throttle, there is a loud click. Does this indicate a problem?
2) The rubber t-hose that connects the carb vents to the overflow tube fell to pieces during the carb install. I've got one coming in on Wednesday at a local dealer, but could I start the bike without it (once I put the tank back on of course)? I'm not sure if I'm reading another post correctly, but as long as the petcock is NOT set to prime, there should be no overflow?
Thanks in advance for any advice. I've found this site to be extremely helpful. Just earlier today, reading that spraying WD-40 on the carbs boots was a huge cure for a frustrating 10 minutes.

1) your carbs may be out of sync, and one of the butterflys is sticking at the full closed position. or both are worn, and sticking at full closed. over rotation will make some noise @ those butterflies. could also be that one of your connections is loose at the throttle tube (little adjustment on the cable) or at the carbs (another cable adjustment) and the cable housing is catching/hanging somewhere. find out where it is. don't want your throttle locking in a turn :)
2) in theory the overflow line shouldn't be in use unless there is a float problem/flooded. in real life, stuff happens. you really don't want your carbs providing all the HOT things down below with a steady supply of gas is something goes weird ;) (bad idea to ride without it)
Thanks, I was able to take another closer look when i wasn't quite as tired. The cable is making the click at carb, there is a little space where little metal cylinder at the cable end fits into the fitting at the carb. I will try to adjust the nut on the carb end of the throttle cable to see if I can adjust the tension and get rid of the play.
