ok, so my buddy has a gs with a strange issue. its a 96 with low miles, and he didnt run it over the winter.
it ran fine last fall, and now it has some wierd issue
when its cold, it turns RIGHT on, with the choke hi, and runs and runs and runs, for a few minutes, then sputters out as it starts to get warm. we hooked it up to a portable charger/jumper dealy, plugged into the wall so it had unlimited power, and cranked the shaZam! out of it a while, and NOTHING, wouldnt run again. we then tried to force start it down a hill, would run a TINY bit, like it was going to die, then die after about 20-30 seconds of running, tried this about 5 times. then we hooked it up to the jeep so it would have TONS of amprage, and while it cranked over faster, it still would run.
what do you all think? this is with a NEW charged battery in it, and with additional juice, we know if fires and runs ok....maybe its flooding? i got nothing on this since it runs fine up to redline until it starts to warm up.....
When it won't start again, check the fuel in the carbs by opening one of the drain bolts (put a tube on it first to avoid getting on the hot engine). If there is fuel in the carbs you should look somewhere else first, but I'm guessing the carbs are dry because it's 1) out of gas in the tank or 2) petcock issues.
gas tank is full, and it runs PERFECTLY until that point. it does it over and over and over, so i dont think it would be either of those issues.
That does not rule out petcock issues. The gas passes through two petcocks to get to the carbs. Check for fuel in the carbs when it won't run. :thumb:
Depending on what position the tank petcock (the one on the bottom of the tank that you can't see without lifting the tank) is in, you may be getting very slow fuel flow.
Alternatively, if your floats are set wrong, you could be flooding the engine with gas. The first thing I'd do is check the float level with a clear vinyl tube on the drain bolt. If there is gas in the bowl and it is at the correct level, that eliminates fuel level as a cause. If you don't look there, you won't know...
ill rip the entire fuucker apart and see if its a fueling issue, thanks for the advice, i couldnt imagine it would be anything else aside from the possibility of that combined with old fuel and both together are making it not work the longer it runs.
you know why i like hondas, i have a 600rr i havent gotten around to rebuilding for 2 years. 2 years, its been sitting, parked. i hooked it up today and it started on the 3rd crank, no bs. its been parked outside too. my nighthawk sat for 3 years, started right up.
