I just finished (kind of) the kat rear wheel swap, except I have a problem. I've shimmed out the sprocket with 2 washers on each bolt. the washers add up to 0.162 in. more than 1/8'. But the chain still rubs the tire. I know that you can't shim the sprocket out too far, that would cause failure. Could I shim it out more? Or could I get a narrower chain? Is a 520 narrower than stock?
congrats on the swap
the 520 chain is stock, going in larger or smaller would mess with the sprockets
people who have done the swap have usually used two washers and barely have chain clearance.
you might want to make sure the wheel is perfectly aligned and chain is adjusted.

As long as the center of the sprocket doesn't go out past the carrier you are fine.I would check alignment and make sure the spacers are seated correctly. Are the rubbers in the cush drive in the wheel in good condition?I'm going to post this link, but I'm pretty sure you've already read thru it. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=25426.msg388101
What size and brand of tire do you have?150-60 or 150-70 is the norm for the Kat wheel. How ever a few have put on 160-60-17 tire.I am preparing to install Shinko 160-60-17 on a Bandit 600 wheel. There should be no difference between the Kat and B6 wheel, well besides looks. It had an Excedra 160-60-17 when I mocked it up.Excedras are the worst tire to ride on tho.
I noticed the pilot powers I have are very close to rubbing the chain. I figure I'll be within 1/8th of an inch of the chain with a 150 rear. I think some tires actually have a wider tread profile beyond the edge carcass of the tire. These seem to be mainly track and racing oriented tires which have an egg-shaped profile for more cornering traction.
I'm going to check the wheel alignment, because I didn't do that last night. I'll report back.
That did the trick. thanks guys, i knew i would have to check the alignment, but i was just tired and cold last night.

That's weird. I didnt have to shim anything. Ken threw the wheel for me and made sure everything lined up and I havent had a problem in almost a year of riding :dunno_white:
That is weird, when I first installed my wheel for a test fit the chain rubber big time. My tire is a 160/60-17. Now to tackle the kat rear shock swap, race tech spring upgrade w/ fork oil, and new paint. I've got my work cut out for me.

If you're talking about Wearse,I dunno if he knows what he's doing or just has great luck. :dunno_white:
Either way,he is the man. :thumb:
Sorry Ken.Indirrectly pick on you. :kiss3:
Okay, then thats the difference then. I have stock SV rubber on my kat wheel which is a 150.
I guess my problem wasn't solved. I went out on a little test ride to check the wheel, when I got back I could tell that the chain had been rubbing the tire. I can't shim it out any more, see picture

The nut will hit the swing arm.
What are my options?
let the chain rub...in about 5-10 miles it will quit and it leaves a kewl design on the side of the tar
or trim a bit of rubber off the tar with a razor blade.....you will never get it that far over

It looks like you are missing a spacer. The one that goes in the sprocket carrier and against the swingarm.
Would that be part 10 in the diagram?

Yes.
I'm going to go see if it's laying around somewhere in the garage. If not, guess I'll be ordering it.
dgyver to the rescue. again. :thumb:
