I woke up today, went to play music, and...
nothing was in my itunes
nothing was in limewire
nothing was in my computer
I did some research and found a free file recovery program, it found maybe 80% of my music, BUT many of those songs are now mixed up with other songs when they play. Wrong title, or they change in the middle of the song, etc. I suspect the following things.
1) malicious code (think RIAA) from downloading a media player called Veoh, or maybe some other @$$hole program
2) w32 virus that deletes music files
3) maybe just hard drive going out. Why else would the songs be scrambled?
AVG Free antivirus and rootkit found nothing.
Anyone have ideas?

1) Get a linux livecd like damnsmalllinux and run some tests on your harddrive. Checking the SMART status should tell you right off if it's failing. There are both command line utilities and some gui-fied ones in the larger livecd's.
2) Once you know the hdd is ok, backup everything you care about to an offline harddrive/flash/dvd/whatever. You have backups, right ?!
3) When was the last time you defragged the hdd ? I like 'perfectdisk' myself for win32 crap. It does a great job.
4) Since you use windows, you know the routine already. Reboot, recheck, then re-install. Sounds like this time is near for you. Suckage.
I haven't had a corrupted database in mac/linux/nix evar. In win32 it seemed to come just as I was getting used to settings and finding programs that did all the stuff I wanted. :(
Good luck
Thanks for the tip. Your mentioning Linux reminds me my neighbor is a web programmer and uses Linux. I should ask him about the whole damn thing.
I dont have backups for shite. All I have is a CD that Norton made me put in and take back out. hehe... Ill be focked... my plan right now is to go buy a new hard drive (western digital caviar 750 or samsung 500) and figure out how to transfer onto that drive. I have some googling to do...
this is such a pain. I wish it was all just plug n play.
Word.
*ahem* Time machine+portable HD *ahem*

the *nix way of doing things:
boot a livecd, mount the two disks you want to copy from/to... then as root:
dd if=/dev/hda1 bs=1g count=howmanygigdoyouwanttocopy of=/dev/hda2 (assuming you have IDE drives, not sata)
then go get coffee and a flick, it'll take about 10 minutes / Gb
i used to clone windows installs to other computers with Toms boot floppy, do network images and junk. it was fantastic stuff to mirror one hard drive onto 20 other machines at once. kills routers :D
sniff, now i just have one laptop to play with, unless srinath hands out shells at the bank....
My mom backs hers up to an external, I back mine up to .mac
never had a problem.
