Ok, here is the story, someone help me. One of my cylinders is firing inconsistently :mad:(really jumpy and more uneven than the other cylinder). Vance and Hines full exhaust, K and N airbox filter, Carbs are 125/37.5 with a 1 and 1/2 turns out.
Symptoms:
Poor MPG
When bike idles it goes back to 1250, then starts bogging down well below 1k.
When I blimp the throttle it returns to idle and the same thing happens.
Feels like one cylinder is just off.
Running at low RPMs the bike seems to sputter a little and is a bit jumpy (like there is leftover unburned fuel in the cylinder).
Trouble-shooting steps taken:
Cleaned air filter.
Opened the carbs and cleaned then.
Checked jet security.
Checked needle valve and floats.
Took off the floats and noticed that the small needle-like cylinder that the float O-ring seats over was damaged. It is splintered and the brass plate with the little hole on the top is missing (dont know if this would cause a problem or not.
Sync'ed the carbs. One carb was smooth (jumping the mercury of the balancer evenly), and the other was jumpy (would jump the mercury up and down much further up and down than the other).
Checked for vacuum leaks.
Checked the plugs (the tips were paper bag brown and good, the sides were a little darker than the tip)
Don't think its a compression problem, as it runs fine above 4k and I still have power.
Can someone help me out here? Any advice would be appreciated. Im thinking either i need to replace the carbs completely, replace spark ignitors, maybe a valve job. Whats the next step should I take? Help please :mad:
if you checked all that stuff, what else could it be but electric?
I was thinking maybe a loose or bad wire going to the coil on the trouble cylinder.Maybe a bad coil or plug wire.
That's all I can think of, I don't really see anything other than an electrical problem.
missing / damaged parts on a carb usually aren't a good thing.
if i knew it's purpose, i guess i could add something meaningful. i'll just leave it alone since i can't.
i don't think it's electrical. if you know the carbs are fairly odd out of sync, and got bits taht are damaged, fix that stuff first. got rust ?
Maybe a stupid question, but which carb is missing the parts, could it be the same side that is mis-firing :dunno_white:
Check the signal generator rotor and plate. Located under the small round cover on the right side of the engine. They have been known to come loose.
Also check all of the connectors in the wire harness for any corrosion. A little electrical grease will prevent any future corrosion.
