Title: fuel problems (videos inside)
Post by: bluelespaul on March 25, 2008, 01:06:45 PM
well im about ready to go back to the dmv and get my M endorsement back. i got a new air filter for the Gs a few days ago and thought it helped it out, which apparently it didnt.

now the bike will only idle once in a while and when id does, it doesnt stay there for long.

even with the choke on all the way its usually idling about 1k rpm and shooting out gobs of white smoke while doing it, one time even shot out a nice little smoke ring. i believe its getting air since the new filter is in. spark plugs were good last time i checked them (right at the end of last season before i put her away cause of the whole license thing) but fuel is the only thing im not sure about. how hard do you think it would be to take the whole system apart and clean then reassemble?

or do you think something else could be wrong with it? anything would be useful, i really love the GS but if it keeps going like this im only about 800$ away from a down payment on a black 636r

the first video is of it when its running like i want it too. full choke, idling about 4.5k rpm.

the second is still at full choke but when it will barely idle at all and when it shooting smoke. i didnt get a vid of the smoke, my cameras battery died.

I'm having the same problem right now with the exception of the "gobs of white smoke". No smoke at all, but the idling symptoms are the same. And . . . I share your sentinement! I'm getting tired of fettling with this bike and ready to look for something else although I really like how this bike fits me and my needs. Bikes' a '06 GS500F with 26,000 k on it. Didn't start happening until about 25,500k.

Good video's - Hopefully someone familiar with this can help us out.

Well beyond that in my case, Frankie B . . .

Didn't want to hijack Bluelespaul's thread, so check out this one . . .

I can't view the vids right now, but you do not want the bike to idle at 4.5k. It sounds like the bike could be fuel starved. Are you sure you don't have your main fuel line pinched? Does the bike run any different if you switch the petcock to reserve?

I think he means 4500rpm with the choke fully on when you first start the bike. My GS500F has done the same thing from new. When the choke is put fully on and hit the starter button, it starts out at low revs (about 2000rpm) for about 5 - 10 seconds, then quickly revs up to 4000 - 4500 rpm. If you try to adjust it down right away, it won't hold an idle and stalls. If you leave it at 4000rpm for about 15 - 30 seconds, you can then drop the choke to about 1500 without it stalling. After a few more minutes you can take the choke right off. I've read about others who experience similar behavior with the newer GS's. so this seems like the way it was designed.

But you're right . . . you don't want it idling at 4500rpm for long . . . I only leave it there for about 15 - 30 seconds.

Could be lots of reasons -- from bad gasoline to valve clearance out of specs. The carbs may be in need of cleaning, syncing, floats adjustment, rejetting issues (if it was rejet), etc, etc, etc..  For now do the easiest. Pour some SeaFoam gas treatment into your gas tank and ride it to empty. Hopefully it will flush the fuel system. If it does not help, let us know. We'll continue troubleshooting.

My guess that you did not winterize your bike before putting it away for the cold season. BTW, GS carbs are engineered well and they work if taken care of, cleaned and synced.. For instance, I properly winterized my bike in November (including treating gas with Stabil, draining carbs, etc). Last week I connected the battery, put petcock in prime for a minute and started the bike within 10 seconds, like since yesterday. Happy riding ~100 miles since then. On a contrary I remeber oh too well what it means if carbs are not taken care of... Then every ride it feels like you want to  :2guns: the lil' bastard.
