Title: how do you measure your valve clearances....
Post by: TheGoodGuy on August 20, 2003, 10:31:48 PM
I know how to, thanks to pkasso (paul) but it seems we dont have feelers that go down to the level that the gs500 needs.

the manual says:

Intake   : 0.03-0.08mm (0.001-0.003in)
Exhaust : 0.03-0.08mm (0.001-0.003in)

my feeler gauge only goes upto 0.038mm (0.0015in)

where do I get gauges that are smaller than that? this one has 25 feeler thinge's.

I looked hard to find the perfect feeler gauge.  The smallest I could find was the .038mm or .00150"

I use this as the smallest and the .076 as the largest.

I have several sizes of shims.  If the the .038mm is too tight, I slip in the next size smaller shim.  I check again with the .038mm if it fits, I check with the .076mm.  If it feels smooth with good amount of resistance, I go with that shim.

Wear will usually cause the gab to be smaller, so you'll be reducing the shim size when you adjust the valves.  Meaning if you have 265 in there now, you'll probably need a 260 etc...

Here's a cool site for conversion.

paul,

you and i have the same one, and yes it was tight for a few of the clearances.

im going to check cycle trends to see if they have that measures smaller.

I do exactly as pkasso states. I think those feeler guages are only available in those sizes, at least they are the most popular ones available.
I just make do with what I got. Adapt and overcome.

Well the only problem is that you cant get a decent reading if you replace the shim...oil fills the bucket and floats the shim...or maybe its just me...I do use super thick oil ...
Cool.

That's the nice thing about shim adjustments, you only have to get it within the range.
