Title: A few tire questions
Post by: iv76erson03 on March 25, 2008, 02:14:09 PM
Hey all!

Just starting to get the bike out for spring and I'm noticing a bit of slippage in the rear tire. I have 8,125 and still am using the original Bridgestones that came on the bike. (2005). The center is worn partially flat but they are still serviceable. Is this about the right mileage for a new rear or can I get a few more out of it?

Also, can i get a stickier tire on the back only like a pirelli sport demon without messing up handling?

Finally, would I be a fool to try and replace my own tire or should i just take it to the shop? I don't know if there are any tools necessary but i have most automotive tools and mechanical skill of about 4 or 5 out of 10.

P.S. any other good tire recommendations that are new or currently a good deal let me know.

You can use any tire that is rated for your rim width and diameter.Sport demons are pretty good. You don't wanna mix bias tires with radials. That is dangerous. Here's a few links to awnser some of your questions.

Here's a link to changing tire yourself on the cheap and details about home balancing. http://www.clarity.net/~adam/tire-changing.html

GSjack has the most knowledge about tires for the GS500.He is the man to seek out.

I am currently in the process of mounting Shinko 005's.160-60-17 on a Bandit600 rear wheel and 120-60-16 on the stock GS front wheel.I'll post a thread about them early summer.

Yeah I'm going to stick with the original rim, but I was thinking about going with a 140 size on the back. Thanks for the links, I'll check it out.

You're welcome.

A 140-70-17 would be great on a stock wheel.
