well i am having trouble finding a tank in a decent price range and i don't have a welder so i started thinking of ways to temporarily fix my current tank... i settled with jb weld... i roughed up the tank after removing the vinyls then applied thin coats of jbweld untill the holes were filed in .... i sanded it down a bit it needs more sanding to smooth it out better... my question is how long should i expect it to last? and will acid erode the jb weld? i prob should have cleaned the tank before but wasn't thinking at all so would i be able to acid clean my tank with the jb weld or will it dissolve?

Vinegar
Vinegar can be used to clean rust from the inside of a gas tank because it contains acetic acid. This can be accomplished by filling the gas tank with water and then draining that. Next, plug the hole where the petcock goes, and fill the tank with the vinegar, leaving it in overnight to dissolve the rust. After pouring out the vinegar, rinse the tank with water. Next fill it with water and a small amount of baking soda to neutralize the acid. After 15 minutes, rinse the tank with water again and continue rinsing until the water you pour out of the tank is completely clear. At this point it is important to make sure the tank has no more water in it. This can be accomplished by getting as much water out as possible, adding WD-40 or rubbing alcohol to the tank, and rinsing it out with gasoline. Immediately fill the tank with premix to prevent further rusting.
Alternatively, a salt and vinegar mixture can be used as these ingredients will react to form a weak sodium acetate and hydrochloric acid solution. This solution should remove rust more quickly than the acetic acid in vinegar alone.

i wouldn't ride like that man. even a simple accident could have you swimming in gas from a gash in that rusty tank. :(

Actually, No idea... Probably not very long.
Barring locating another tank, what you could do is lead the holes and line the tank with Red Kote, available at any NAPA. Use acid core plumber's solder and plenty of flux. Be sure to thoroughly remove the flux afterwards though! Bridging holes soundly with solder takes quite a bit of practice. If you're up to it, it might be worth a try.
Obviously, leading your holes will require a re-paint. But it looks like you're committed to that already. Beyond that, I don't think there's much you can do beyond looking for a new tank in good condition.

i just need a tank for neighborhood tuning i cant tune long on my half gallon tank...so actuall traffic riding wont be done mostly parking lots or dead end roads

Yes.Any year tank will fit.The only thing is the side covers don't have anything to hold the front of them.I made some brackets and used the rubber gromets to hold them.Now I can adjust them to fit a little better at the tank and seat.BTW my bike is an 89 with an 04 tank.
I don't think it'll hold too long, if completely at all, but maybe you'll have more luck than me. I temporarily repaired an oil pan with it and it just doesn't seal a hole like that very well.

I have an 04 tank also on a 90...well actually 2 but Im saving the other one for another project. Yeah, I didnt have anything for my sides to connect to either but Im now sporting an 04/05 tail so everything looks perfect. Just waiting on that center piece to come so I can lose the zipties. Right,Ken?
