hello im new here so hello everyone
its a shame that my first post is not a good one but here goes.
when my bike has warmed up and im driving at a steady 30-50mph i can hear a clicking noise which has been getting worse overtime it doesnt seem to be there when the bike is cold
but when warmed up it gets louder.. also even after driving along with out stopping at 60mph with a cold wind the two side crankcases are very very hot almost untouchable.
i took the bike to the motorbike mechchanics near me and the first thing he said when he listened to it running was "has it got any oil in it?" after checking the oil himself he belived me that it had!! as he said it sounded like there was no oil getting to the cylinders!! he suggested that i take off the sump and clean the wire mesh and change the oil filter as he thought it could be blocked as he said if you use gasket seal (blue) when replacing a gasket some of it squashes out and gets in the oil and blocks up these bits, well i have just changed a gasket and used gasket seal so i thought that he could be correct i did what he said and the mesh was a bit blocked but not totally so i cleaned it out and changed filter put it all back together and when i first started it it sounded really good which is strange as the oil was totally drained!! so would have taken a little while to recircualte, anyway after driving it for a bit it gets really hot on the two crankcases again and the noise starts again
ive looked in the haines manual and it says overheating can be caused by a few things
the things ive picked out which i think are most likely are
worn oil pump or clogged oil passages (i really dont want it to be this as ive got to re drain the oil take the case off and then the clutch just to get to it!!!)
fuel air mixture incorrect ( it could be this as ive had the carbs off and cleaned them and ive messed around with pilot screws and also put in a new standard airfilter)
carbon build up in combustion chamber ( ive added some fuel additive a while back to see if this would clean off any carbon but it doesnt seem to have made any difference)
carburetter intake manifolds loose ( it could be this as ive had the carbs off and on alot and they are a little misshapen on the ones that join to the airbox from the carbs)
theres some other things listed but they dont seem as likely to be the problem i think.
im very sure the noise is only starting BECAUSE its overheating as when its cold it sounds ok
what i would like to know is could a fuel/air mix or carb synch issue cause this much overheating?
even when the noise is happening and its really hot the bike seems to run fine its got lots of power and runs ok at low and high speeds
should i get the carbs synched and the fuel/air mix done or should i just open the case and check the oil pump??
any suggestions very much appreciated thanks in advance
Ben
What ... The distance between the bad kind of knocking and death is !2 miles.
I'd change the oil and filter, make sure you put good quality 20W50 and new filter.
Then dont lug the motor when you ride it.
If it still makes a noise, valve adjustment and general cam shaft side play check. If that is high try to stuff a washer shim in there.
Cool.
