Title: Isnt the charging voltage for our battery supposed to be 12-14v
Post by: TheGoodGuy on March 29, 2008, 08:59:38 PM
I was charging my battery today (last charged a week ago) but i noticed something odd. My charger set at 12v at 2amp is putting out or the battery is drawing 17.5v+ when charging. I disconnected the charger since the charger showed the battery was full. So I disconnected and a few minutes later checked the voltage.. 16.48v

I will check it after a shower. I dont want to start the bike if the battery is above 16v and blow the starting system or the regulator. I had this battery put in last year (according to my repair logs) and I did not ride it last year. I am trying to ride this season. I got the bike up running again  last week but the battery was weak so i had to jump it with my portable jumper.

So both last week and tonight it was charging 17v+.. at one time i saw about 18.5. Is the battery f%&ked?

Its a cyclegear branded battery cost me about 30 or so for it.

How did you get your reading?Straight from the battery with nothing connected,I hope.Check the voltage from your charger without it being connected to the battery. That may give some clue.

I'll check the charger without a battery connected to see what its outputting. But its funny that the battery when fully charged a few minutes later was at 16v.

Lemme finish dinner and then i shall go check for that.
