Title: clubman bars and an F to E conversion!
Post by: bluelespaul on April 01, 2008, 03:01:31 PM
well, ive decided that i really do like my GS. there are just a few things that i wanna change on it. after doing more research on just how easy it is, i am going to convert to a GS-E and i want some clubman bars among other little bits and pieces.

my only question is: are there any issues with clubman bars fitting properly? my dealer said he can get me some for around 22$ and he was just concerned that they might hit the tank.

also if anyone here has a GS with those bars can i see some more pics of them? the ones on the wiki are okay, but they dont really show how they fit and how it changes your riding position.

Before he orders the bars, find out how wide they are before they bend.  The set thats on my GS500 don't clear the triple clamp, so you can't rotate them forward enough to put them in the proper orientation, making them painful to use.

Where did you get those caps that go in where your stock mirrors screw in? I took mine off since I'm using bar end mirrors, and I need something to fill those holes. I was thinking about getting two bolts, but I like the look of what you're running.

You might want to check intot some SM1-2's before doing the clubmans or just a dragbar. If im not mistaken, the clubmans are pretty low.

They are a gxsr style mirror they have the integrated turn signals in them. if you going to an E style they would be great cause you wouldn't have to find a place to mount your turn signals

Ah, if mine had come with THOSE clubmans I would have retained them I think.  Oh well, clipons are here already, can't stop now! :P

I was talking about these, the little black caps that are plugging the hole where your stock mirrors were. Circled in red.

guitarking what are the size of those clubmans and where did you get them? i was thinking about doing clip ons but those look great and if they clear the fairing and dont hit at lock then im definatly going to get some

thanks for those pics bucks, that was exactly what i was looking for.

i got started on this little project today, all the fairings and such are off, tomorrow im gonna order the bars, risers, bar end mirrors, headlight, turn signals and the headlight mounting bracket. is there anything else im missing?

while i have her apart im gonna go through the fuel system and see if i can get rid of that starvation problem. the things the wiki says to check seem like they should be pretty easy, hopefully i wont have to take it to the dealer.

and pics of the whole thing should be here tomorrow night.

CLUBMAN'S as a style and brand come only in one size. With mine i Had to get dirtbike risers from pitposse.com becaue they sat to low they look fine and arent noticed. they only thing i did was i widened the bars in the center about an inch so they were a lil farther away from my tank at lock. I believe they were fine but i had already cut them anyways. so get the bars get the risers put them togather then see if they need to be widened if so email me and i can tell you an easy way to do it.

mine too... they were far too narrow to use.  So I cut em in half and bolted one to each clamp and took the cap out of the ends and put em in the middle.  No worries!

anyone know where i can get some risers? my dealer cant seem to find them and im having some trouble finding them on ebay.

http://pitposse.stores.yahoo.net/noname88.html

these are what i used on the bike thats pictured above you have to paint them but thats not a big deal or you can go to a salvae yard and get a couple of tops and flip them over and get longer bolts. these risers are cheaper though.

Also If you cut your bars and make them rider. you shouldn't have to but if you do to give you more room make sure you weld another piece in there I mentioned before how to do it email me if you have any questions. if you don't your bars will lib out and move and be uneven and will just cause you a lot of problems

i can never figure out why someone would take a perfectly good faired bike and turn it into a naked one...but each to his own.  good luck with the mods

im gonna keep all my GS-F parts just in case i wanna go back, sorry

oh and does anyone know if a kink in the vent hose for the fuel tank would cause vacuum issues?  i just thought of it now that when i pulled the tank the vent hose had a HUGE kink in it, almost to where its creased.

EDIT: im not sure if vent hose was the proper name, i mean the one in this pic thats the farthest to the left, it just goes from the bottom of the tank, attached to nothing on the other end near the swing arm

I'm not entirely sure anymore since someone bought my GS about a year ago I think (lol), but I think that hose goes to the hole just right inside the fuel cap so that if fuel gets that high or spills in there, it won't overfill and spill onto the outside of the tank... (again, not 100% sure...)

Damn I miss that bike.  :(  I sure wish I kept it as a track bike or something.  but at least someone is getting to ride her and enjoy her as much as I did.  (wow...  that sounded dirty.  lol)

looks good. Hopefully you get those risers on because after a good 20 mile jaunt; you'll probably starting feeling it in your back. Question: where does the air baffle mount up to? the Big plastic piece that was underneath the cowl; what was it bolted to?

it was boled right under that little middle plate between my fork tubes (sorry dunno what its called lol) in the last pic you can see the two holes where it screwed in. theres that little ring looking thing thats kinda rusted, they are the two holes on both sides of that.

if my description sucks i can circle them in paint if ya want.

i already do have risers. and in those pics they`re installed... haha
