Title: GS500F tail
Post by: Tang on April 04, 2008, 09:11:42 AM
Can a GS500F tail fit on a 1998 GS500E?

Good question...  I don't think anyone has tried.

My guess is the mounting locations are likely similar.  The seat and tank are different on the F model, so there may be a fit problem unless you change out everything.

I recall having read somewhere on this board that tail side plastics cannot be swapped between pre- and post-'01 models. A matter of frame mounting tabs, IIRC.

It is not a direct swap but it can be done with some work. I have 04/05 tank and tail on my 97. It requires new mounts for the seat, pastics, grab handle and brake light.

There are some info and pics in my thread on my 97 build: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=33344.0

The tail is actually an easy fit. I bent up sheet metal and clamped it down and it had a grommet carrier for the front and middle. Rear, I made an L bracket and welded a nut under it. Not very easy, but still nowhere near as hard as the front fairing.
The seat is a straight fit on a 01+ tank and 01+ plastics. Just need a couple blocks to go under the rear bearing buttons on the seat.
Tank is a straight fit. No mods needed. Maybe 1-2 washers under the rear bracket.
Cool.
