Title: quick help! wont start
Post by: shuluke on April 04, 2008, 06:25:39 PM
Hello guys. I have been riding for a few weeks now every Saturday and Sunday and as of right now it won't even start. Its making a bunch of fast clicks but not turning over. What should I do? I don't leave my bike at my house so any suggestions will be looked into right away. I put some seafoam in it a few weeks ago. Any suggestions?!

Theres not enough juice in the battery to turn over the starter , get it on a tender or if it really old , buy a new one :thumb:

What weight of oil you have in the bike? i switched back to 10-40 from 20-50 and it seems to start up stronger and easier now, the gs doesnt have juice to spare.

I am not sure the weight. It was from Suzuki. I can check probably tomorrow. I will either buy a tender and if its cheaper to buy a new battery or like 10 dollars more ill get a new battery. Ill update this post tomorrow.

If the battery is shot a tender won't help.  Take the battery out and take it to an auto parts store that tests batteries.

A tender WOULD be a good purchase, though, to help keep your new battery charged.

I think it's a dead battery. I've left the bike with the parking lights on (why did Suzi put that mode right next to 'off'??) for a few hours, and it did exactly what you just described: clicks without turning over.

When the problem is oil that's too heavy or too old, it will turn over but will not catch. Is it just me, or is the gs _extremely_ sensitive to oil viscosity?

just boost it to start it then get a new battery. you don't want to get stuck away from home with something as silly as a worn out battery :)

Motorcycle batteries usually charge at 1.5 or 2 amps max. Trickle chargers put out way less. 2 amps will fully charge a new battery in a couple hours. Match the wimpy electrical systems on bikes too keep from destroying things. Avoid the use of car chargers and jump starters. Will cost less too.

I leave my bike at a cousins house. So no worries. I tried charging but still didn't turn over. It wasn't charged fully so my next step is to buy a new battery. If that works ill invest in a trikle charger. Thanks for the help!

did u try boosting it with another bike or bike battery?  just to make sure it is not something other than the battery, but hopefully it is just that simple.

No I didn't. I should have thought about that. Jump it like I am jumping a car right? Same procedure? Ill try that before I pick up a new battery...

yes, try and use another bike.  some here say that jumping with a car can harm your bike.  all i know is that i have jumped with a car before without a problem. but that is not to say it cannot happen, perhaps i was just lucky

if you jump it from a car do NOT have the car running or  you may damage the electrical.
