They could have at least leaned it against a tree...

I cracked up when I saw this add, probably make a few bucks parting it out.  :dunno_white:

Pics suck on that ad, if that's a stock 4 into 1 exhaust then it's the CB750F. 4 valve 750 instead of 2 valve motor. For 100 bucks I would snap it up in a heartbeat.

bucks go get that CB...4~1 or not the exhaust still will cover your investment.  REbuilt forks go for about $150.  The handlebars themselves are worth about 20.  Carbs = $75~150, depending on if they;re flats or flies.  Engine is worth a couple hundred even if you don't know if it's good...and say as much.

I'll email the guy, see if he still has it. This would give me a nice summer project, with a decent profit.

Still no response, but I've been doing some research on old CB's. A lot of the parts on ebay that go for high amounts are sandcast, how would I be able to tell if this CB had sandcast parts? I'm in the process of creating a profile at a Honda forum, so hopefully I'll be able to get some answers there.

Sand cast parts have a rough i.e. sand papery finish to them.

That's a 79~84 750....no sandcast.  It has comstar wheels.

I was looking at some pics from different years, and I was starting to sadly come to that realization.  Still worth it to part out though, right?

It just means thta the motor is worth $100~200...instead of $400~ish.  Old bikes have something in common...they all rust.  People want tanks, exhausts, handlebars, seat pans, swingarms, unpitted forks and axles, and so forth.  Sometimes you have to hang onto some parts for a while but it's worth it.  You'll be able to recoup your investment plus a few cases of beer, minimum.

I saw this today and couldn't resist sharing. This guy has his bike priced at $3,000. But it needs new plugs, so he'd be willing to drop it down to $2,900. But if he replaces the plugs then it'll go up to $3,500....cause he doesn't have the time or tools to do it.

depends on what your chnging it on...

The tank has to be raised and the airbox removed from my bike to change plugs.

Its a 3 hour job shop rate is usually 80 to 120 an hour here.

I didn't even think about that, probably would take a bit longer than on the gs. But a $600 dollar difference seems a tad extreme.

No shaZam!!!  I changed my spark plugs the other day in under 5 minutes.
I can't imagine changing the plugs on a TL is much more difficult than on your SV, Geep.  Mak!!  You've had TL's, tell us how long it should take.

Even on my Gixxer it wasn't an hours worth of work.  You just lift the tank, yank the airbox and change em, no reason it should be 3 hours worth of labor.
Title: Re: Old Honda 750
Post by: bettingpython on April 07, 2008, 03:12:29 PM
Thats what the flat rate shop labor book quotes it at.

In reality it's about an 1 1/2 hour job.
Undo the steering damper.
Take off seat
undo front tank bolts
pivot tank up.
remove airbox cover
unhook the servo actuator cable from the airbox flap,
remove airbox
Thouroghly clean top end of engine or your gonna drop crap down into the plug recess and you will never get it cleaned out.
unhook coil packs from plugs.

Now the important part with a 954. Spend 2 hours trying to find your OEM tool kit because the honda plug wrench is the only thing small enough to actually fit down inside the valve cover into the recesses where the plugs are at.

start new plugs into threads blindly...use a piece of vacuum hose here so you dont cross thread anything.

Spend another hour trying to figure out where you stuck that plug wrench at this time.

assemble in reverse order, spending another 1/2 hour trying to find the correct tourque specs for your streering damper mount bolts.

5 hours later go ride.

And now: 'How to change spark plugs on a 750ss'
Buy plugs
grab appropriate wrench
approach left-hand side of bike and kneel
thank god you don't have to check the valves
yank plug wires off
remove old plugs
install new
replace wires
grab beer

i wouldn't even let a dealership charge me $600 to change plugs. i'd tear it apart and figure it out myself. even if i had to buy special tools and such an bum rides while figuring it out, i doubt it'd cost me $600!  :cookoo:

I've got you all beat on changing plugs...who needs to "kneel"?

keep in mind, though, that there is a HUGE HUGE HUGE difference in changing plugs on a twin-spar/trellis frame than with a backbone frame.

Title: Re: Old Honda 750
Post by: makenzie71 on April 07, 2008, 09:39:40 PM
Well...lets look at the proceedure:

Step 1.  Pull spark plug boot and wire out of always-exposed valve cover.
Step 2.  Use socket and ratchet to remove and replace spark plug.
Step 4.  Insert plug boot.
Step L.  Repeat.

It's steo L that keeps getting me hung up.

just keep reminding yourself that when you do get it running perfectly, you'll be damn proud of what you've done. unless you get pissed at some point and take a 20# sledge to it....oh, wait, that was me and the '80 chevy luv i was rebuilding.

Ohhhh and just be glad you don't have to use NGK iridiums either. The cheapest I found plugs for my bike was $15.00.....thats $15.00 per plug.

I guarantee you you'll only screw up and foul out a set of plugs once by popping the throttle when the bike is first started on a cold day.

Local stealership the plugs were $22 a piece that time.

Post by: spc on April 08, 2008, 11:03:25 AM
I have to use NGK Iridiums, and I get both plugs for 13 and change at Autozone.  The only drawback is they don't keep em in stock so it takes a day or two to get them.  I've yet to foul them and I'm usually all over the throttle 10 seconds after turning it on.

Really.......IMR9A-9H plugs are 18$ a piece here locally, and have to be ordered.

Is that the same plug for your bike?
